Focusing on the selection, maintenance, spare parts, and second-hand distribution of Stäubli equipment, we answered the most frequently asked questions from customers.
What should you do if a Stäubli robot loses its Zero Point? Do you need to replace the battery?
Stäubli uses a 19-bit secure digital multi-turn absolute encoder. Officially, it doesn't require batteries to maintain zero or initialize to run, which differs from models like FANUC and Yaskawa that rely on batteries to maintain zero. Therefore, when the CS9 controller issues a position-type alarm, don't rush to calibrate it; first check for a collision, slippage of the reducer, or encoder body fault. If you really want to recalibrate and follow a dynamic absolute calibration process, the tools and operations are not compatible with other brands.
What are the differences between the Stäubli TX2 and TS2? How should you choose?
The TX2 is a six-axis model, from TX2-40 to TX2-200, with a payload range of 2-170kg and a reach of 515-2609mm. The TX2-40 has a repeatability of ±0.02mm, and there are also L/XL long-arm versions. The TS2 is a SCARA, TS2-40/60/80/100, with a reach of 460-1000mm, a TS2-40 payload of 8.4kg, and an accuracy of ±0.01mm. The two platforms share the structural section and CS9 controller, with the programming environment and some spare parts connected. For high-speed pick-and-place within the plane, choose TS2; for complex postures and obstacle maneuvering, choose TX2.
Why is Stäubli so expensive? Why do food and pharmaceutical factories choose it?
The value lies in the design of sensitive environments. The HE series (TX2-60 HE, TS2-60 HE) can withstand high-pressure washing and is compatible with NSF H1 food-grade lubricating oil; Pharmaceutical TX2-60 Stericlean, TX2-90 Stericlean+ can withstand VHP hydrogen peroxide sterilization and meet GMP A/B standards; The cleanroom TX2-60 SCR can reach ISO Level 2. Additionally, the JCS hollow shaft gearbox and the body have no external cables, resulting in fewer cleaning dead spots. But for ordinary loading and unloading tasks, these features aren't useful and the cost performance isn't high.
Do Stäubli robots have long maintenance cycles? Is it easy to find accessories?
To be honest: Stäubli has far fewer domestic spare parts than FANUC and ABB, has limited local spare parts inventory, and the OEM order cycle is generally longer than the Big Four, with higher prices. Core components like the CS9 controller and JCS gearbox can basically only go through the OEM channels. We are not an authorized Stäubli agent, but a third-party technical service provider. For pre-repair of board-level repairs, if replacement is necessary, the actual order cycle is calculated. After inspection, an estimate is provided, without prior order days. The service center is in Nanchong, offering door-to-door visits from Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, and Guizhou; Guangzhou Henghuan Technology Co., Ltd. provides business and technical support.
How good is the resale value of Stäubli second-hand robots? Is it worth buying?
Stäubli new models are expensive, and the absolute second-hand prices look decent, but the distribution is narrow—there are few integrators in China who understand them, and second-hand buyers are mostly concentrated in three industries with strict requirements for hygiene and cleanliness: food, pharmaceuticals, and semiconductors. Models like the TX2-60, which operate under general conditions, are actually harder to sell. Before buying a used Stäubli, be sure to confirm the specific version (HE, SCR, Stericlean, ESD, MedX) and CS9 controller configuration. If you choose the wrong version or the cleanliness level is not up to standard, the machine is basically useless.
Does the Stäubli TX2touch collaborative robot need a safety fence?
TX2touch-60 (4.5kg/670mm), TX2touch-60L, TX2touch-90, TX2touch-90L use SafeTouch tactile safety skin, which stops immediately upon contact. Combined with the CS9 controller's SIL3/PL e safety functions (safety speed limit, safety stop, safe zone, safety tool), the design supports human-machine collaboration without fences. But whether fences can be omitted ultimately depends on risk assessment: what kind of end tool is used, whether the workpiece has sharp edges, and how fast the beat is all taken into account. We don't make verbal promises that are guaranteed to be made.
Can old Stäubli robots still be repaired? What about discontinued models?
Stäubli's current main lineup is the TX2/TS2 paired with the CS9 controller. Earlier generation products (non-CS9 platforms) supported factory spare parts shrinkage. Common wear issues with encoders, servo modules, and gearboxes could be resolved by disassembling parts or board-level repairs. Once the controller mainboard is damaged, it is relatively difficult. Before taking over an old machine, it's recommended to conduct a thorough inspection to understand the controller model, firmware version, and key component status before deciding whether to repair or replace it. As long as the core components of the TX2/TS2 in production are not damaged, the repair route is open.
