Focusing on the selection, maintenance, spare parts, and second-hand distribution of KUKA equipment, we answered the most frequently asked questions from customers.
What should I do if the KUKA robot loses Zero Hour? How to handle KSS alarms?
KUKA's prompt information is displayed by KSS number. Zero loss is usually accompanied by an RDC (Resolver Digital Converter) related alarm, most often due to the encoder's backup battery being dead or losing position data after power outage. Replace the battery and use SmartPAD for zero calibration. If you have an EMD electronic measuring device, calibrate each axis according to the standard process. If not, use the micrometer method, which may have lower accuracy. After completing the soft limit, reset it. It's recommended to re-teach the recorded points in the program.
What are the differences between the KUKA KR C4 and KR C5 controllers?
The KR C4 is the largest cabinet type, available in smallsize-2, compact, midsize, and extended sizes; The KR C5 is a new generation, smaller in size and with lower energy consumption. Cabinet types range from micro to quadcab, and small units like KR AGILUS and KR SCARA often use the KR C5 micro. The hardware of both is not directly interchangeable with WorkVisual projects; upgrading is equivalent to replacing cabinets, involving security configuration and program migration, not simple replacement. Earlier versions like the KR C2 and KR C2ed05 had very limited official support.
Is it easy to find KUKA robot parts? How long is the maintenance cycle?
KUKA's domestic localized supply has improved significantly in recent years; regular parts like batteries, fans, cables, and smartPAD are easier to equip. KR C4 boards and driver modules have the largest circulation, KR C5 orders are smooth, and older parts from the KR C2 generation are hard to find. We do not promise fixed delivery times. For board-level repairs, we will repair them first; if replacement is necessary, we will calculate according to the order cycle and provide an estimate after inspection. The service center is in Nanchong, and on-site testing can be arranged in Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan, and Guizhou.
What industries and working conditions are KUKA robots suitable for?
KUKA covers 13 major categories from 3kg to 1300kg. Automakers are the main battleground, with the largest usage volumes for spot welding, gluing, and handling; Casting and machining include KR QUANTEC's Foundry casting protection plates and nano series; For heavy-duty handling, see KR FORTEC (240-800kg) and KR TITAN (over 1000kg); The PA series for palletizing, with the arctic version capable of being stored in cold storage at -30°C; Food and pharmaceutical products include HO food-grade lubrication and CR cleanroom versions.
How is the market for KUKA second-hand robots? What should you pay attention to when buying?
The main source of used KUKA robots is production-line upgrades at car manufacturers, with the largest volumes like KR QUANTEC and KR FORTEC, priced slightly lower than Japanese brands with similar loads, because Japanese brands have a broader domestic audience. When choosing, focus on three things: the number of control cabinets (KR C4 is more expensive and easier to repair than KR C2), operating hours, and whether the long-term load spectrum is always fully loaded. Specialized models like the casting and food versions have a narrow audience and are slow to sell. Prices are determined based on equipment model, fault status, and maintenance plan, and a quotation will be issued after inspection.
What are the common types of faults in KUKA robots?
Several high-incidence categories: RDC backup battery depletion leading to loss of zero position, which is the most common; KR QUANTEC and KR FORTEC RV reducers worn and wrist oil leakage during long-term full-load operation; Cables and seals in casting environments are corroded by dust and high temperatures; The smartPAD's emergency stop button and handwheel have poor contact after long-term use; Control cabinet fans and capacitors are aging. Another type is the WorkVisual project and on-site hardware configuration not matching, powering on but security configuration errors, which is a configuration issue rather than hardware failure.
Can the old KR C2 KUKA robot still be repaired?
You can fix it, but think it through. Official support for the KR C2 generation is already very limited; the board and driver modules can only be repaired by disassembling parts and the board, and how far we can repair them is not entirely up to us. The mechanical parts have no major issues; the reducer, seals, and wiring harnesses are all manageable. It is recommended to perform an inspection first: if it is only peripheral parts like batteries, fans, or cables, repair them; If the core board breaks and you can't find the parts, you need to evaluate whether upgrading the whole machine is more cost-effective. This is a matter to be examined.
