Yunnan Province

Yunnan's industry has three starting points. The first is Gejiu tin: tin mining there dates back to the Western Han Dynasty; the Gejiu Mining Merchants' Bureau was established in 1883 as the predecessor of Yunnan Tin; it was reorganized as Gejiu Tin Co., Ltd. in 1909, and from 1909 to 1939 its tin output accounted for 90% of the national total. In September 1940 the Nationalist government, the Bank of China, and the Yunnan provincial government jointly founded Yunnan Tin Co., Ltd., which was listed in 1953 among the 156 key projects of the First Five-Year Plan. The second is wartime relocation: after 1937 large numbers of factories and mines moved inland; by 1940 the Kunming area had 80 factories, forming four industrial districts at Haikou, Majie, Ciba, and Anning. The Central Machine Works was completed at Ciba on September 9, 1939, as China's first large state-owned machine-building plant; at the end of the war it had 623 machines and built China's first 2,000 kW generator; it was renamed the Kunming Machine Tool Plant in 1953. Contemporaries included the Central Electrical Apparatus Works, which came online in July 1939 and produced China's first electrical conductor (today's Kunming Cable Group); the China Electric Steel Works, which smelted Yunnan's first furnace of steel in August 1941; and the No. 22 Arsenal, which built China's first 6x30 military binoculars at Haikou in 1939. The third is the Third Front movement: from 1964 Yunnan designated 35 border counties as the "first line," Kunming and 40 other counties and districts as the "second line," and 58 counties in the northeast and northwest as the "third line" rear area; the Guizhou-Kunming Railway opened in 1966 and the Chengdu-Kunming Railway in 1970. From 1964 to 1980 the province invested a cumulative 15.095 billion yuan in Third Front construction, with the Kunyang Phosphate Mine, Dongchuan Mining Bureau, Kunming Iron and Steel, Yunnan Tin, and the Huize lead-zinc mine newly built or expanded; by 1975 military-industrial output accounted for 18.7% of the province's gross industrial output. The Third Front military system later incubated the province's two equipment-manufacturing mainstays: Kunming Shipbuilding Equipment Group (prepared in 1969, predecessor the Yunnan Sixth Machinery Industry Bureau) completed the domestic production of a full tobacco primary-processing equipment set at the Xuchang cigarette factory in 1988, ending complete reliance on imports; and the Kunming Machine Tool Plant and Yunnan Machine Tool Plant pivoted to general-purpose metal-cutting machine tools. The share of gross industrial output in combined industrial and agricultural output rose from 12.5% in 1952 to 50.5% in 1980.

In 2024, Yunnan's GDP was 3,153.410 billion yuan, up 3.3%. Total industrial value added was 745.392 billion yuan, and above-scale industrial value added grew 3.3%. By category, mining fell 4.4%, manufacturing grew 3.0%, and electricity, heat, gas, and water production and supply grew 7.1%. By segment, the tobacco industry grew 1.9%, the energy industry grew 3.5%, and non-tobacco, non-energy industry grew 4.1%. Value added of equipment manufacturing and high-tech manufacturing grew 19.0% and 17.7% respectively, accounting for 10.3% and 10.7% of above-scale industry; value added of the electronics sector grew 22.0%, contributing 60.3% of above-scale industrial growth. Among the industry's "new three items," silicon photovoltaics grew 0.7%, green aluminum grew 11.7%, and new-energy batteries grew 23.6%, together contributing 20.8% of growth; the aluminum alloying rate exceeded 50% for the first time, reaching 51.4%. Leading industries are tobacco, nonferrous and rare-precious metals metallurgy, green aluminum and silicon, phosphorus chemicals, equipment manufacturing, biomedicine, and green food. Leading enterprises include Yunnan Tin (first globally in tin production and sales since 2005, with 47.78% domestic and 22.54% international market share in 2023), Yunnan Copper, Yuntianhua, Yunnan Baiyao, and Hongta Group. At the park level, the Kunming Anning Industrial Park is building three 100-billion-yuan clusters in petrochemicals, metallurgy, and new-energy batteries; silicon photovoltaics in Lufeng, Chuxiong, and green aluminum in Yanshan, Wenshan, reach industrial concentrations close to 70% and 90% respectively. Deep processing of Chinese medicinal materials has been listed as one of the five key industries for development in the province's industry and information technology sector; 79.22 million yuan of fiscal funds were allocated in 2025 to support 120 deep-processing projects, and the provincial catalog of fresh-processing varieties has grown to 137. Under the "Yunnan Province Implementation Plan for Promoting Equipment Renewal in Industry" (Yun Gong Xin Gui Hua [2024] No. 263), by 2027 the penetration rate of digital R&D and design tools and the CNC-ization rate of key processes at above-scale industrial enterprises are to exceed 90% and 75% respectively.

Nonferrous metallurgy is the sector with the densest industrial robot deployment in Yunnan. The Yunnan Tin Branch rolled out a 5G private network in 2022; its tin refining workshop is equipped with straight-line casting robot arms, 5G+ tin-ingot handling AGVs and RGVs, and 5G remote-controlled overhead cranes, cutting operating costs by 18% and labor by nearly 40% and raising warehousing efficiency by 80%; it was selected for MIIT's 2025 5G Factory Catalog. In green aluminum, Yunnan Shenhuo Aluminum in Funing, Wenshan, produces 900,000 tons of electrolytic aluminum a year; a plant of the same scale in Henan would need 8,000 workers, while Funing needs only 2,000. Yunnan Aluminum Wenshan has deployed more than a dozen automation scenarios, including unmanned overhead cranes, unmanned forklifts, and automatic bundling robots. In tobacco, after the Yuxi Cigarette Factory's 2022 in-place technical transformation, casing offset fell 54.03% and flavoring precision improved 31.2%; in May 2025 it was rated an advanced-level smart factory of the tobacco industry. In steel and mining, Yuxi Dahongshan Mining has invested a cumulative 320 million yuan in a digital mine, cutting underground workers from 2,900 person-times in 2016 to 600. In pharmaceuticals, Yunnan Baiyao's smart factory was named a "Global Lighthouse Factory" by the World Economic Forum in September 2025. In agriculture, the province's comprehensive mechanization rate for crop plowing, planting, and harvesting rose from 50% in 2020 to 55%, but post-harvest handling varies widely. In flowers, the Jinning Yuntianhua Huajianpu demonstration park uses infrared imaging to grade stems by bloom openness and length and bundles them automatically; Dounan handled 14.176 billion stems worth 11.574 billion yuan in 2024, yet sorting at the auction stage remains manual. In coffee, planting area of 1.1931 million mu and output of 150,200 tons each account for more than 97% of the national total; the specialty-grade share rose from 8% in 2021 to 31.6% in 2024, with sorting done by CCD color sorters. In medicinal materials, notoginseng producing areas have built automated lines featuring human-finger-mimicking trimming and machine-vision sorting, processing 1,000 tons of fresh notoginseng a year. In tea, Pu'er tea companies have commissioned "vision plus spectroscopy" sorting robots with roughly three times manual efficiency. Yunnan does not publish sector-level industrial robot base statistics; annual new installations and robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers, IFR basis) also have no public data (to be verified).
