PART 01

Industrialization History

Lijiang's industry has long centered on processing local resources; its machinery and chemical sectors took shape mainly during the Third Front period. In 1954 the Lijiang Machine Tool Plant was built on Nanmen Street in Dayan Old Town, covering more than 90 mu (1 mu is about 0.067 hectare). It shifted to boring machine production in the late 1970s; in the 1980s its products earned the "Yunnan Quality Product" title, sold across 29 provincial-level regions, and were exported to more than 20 countries and regions. After Dayan Old Town was inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1997, the plant proposed relocation on its own initiative; it completed the move and reconstruction in the first half of 2002, was restructured as Yunnan Lijiang Machine Tool Co., Ltd. in 2003, and became the Lijiang Jianfu Machine Tool Group in 2013. In chemicals, the Lijiang Prefecture Chemical Fertilizer Plant was started in 1969 with over 8 million yuan of investment; it trial-produced ammonium bicarbonate and synthetic ammonia in 1970, but ran losses year after year because it was far from raw material bases and costs were too high, and was shut down in 1980. The Huaping County Chemical Fertilizer Plant was prepared in 1974 and came online in 1975. The Lijiang County Electrochemical Plant, completed in 1973, was the region's first small chlor-alkali producer. Yongsheng porcelain dates back to the Ming Dynasty; in the eighth year of Tongzhi (1869), Liu Yihe founded the "Yicha Bowl Factory," and in the early Republic era the Jiyu Company invited Jingdezhen technicians to make underglaze five-color porcelain. After 1949 the state-owned Lijiang Prefecture Yongsheng Porcelain Factory was built, and in 1960 "Liyong porcelain" accompanied Premier Zhou Enlai as a gift on his visit to Myanmar. Industrial totals long remained small: in 2009 the city's cumulative gross industrial output was 6.6 billion yuan and industrial value added was 2.66 billion yuan, just 23% of GDP.

PART 02

Current Industrial Development

In 2024, Lijiang's GDP was 71.003 billion yuan, up 4.7%, the third-fastest growth in the province; secondary industry value added was 23.875 billion yuan, up 8.2%. Full-year above-scale industrial value added grew 10.5%, also third in the province. By the three major categories, mining value added fell 55.4%, manufacturing grew 13.3%, and electricity, heat, gas, and water production and supply grew 9.0%. Above-scale industry covers 13 major sectors, of which pharmaceutical manufacturing, nonferrous metal smelting and rolling, computer, communications, and other electronic equipment manufacturing, and electricity and heat production and supply grew 23.8%, 91.2%, 17.3%, and 9.2% respectively. Main products: 67.1210 million kg of monocrystalline silicon, 43.315 billion kWh of electricity, 4.105 million tons of cement, and 144.4 tons of bulk active pharmaceutical ingredients. At year-end there were 66 above-scale industrial enterprises; full-year operating revenue fell 24.2% and total profit fell 31.9%, with agricultural and sideline food processing down 28.9%. At the park level, the Jinshan High-Tech Zone and the Huaping Industrial Park completed 18.842 billion yuan of above-scale gross industrial output; LONGi's monocrystalline silicon technical transformation, Wuxing Graphite phase II, and quartz crucible phase III advanced quickly; LONGi's Huaping phases I, II, and III came online in sequence with capacity of 35 GW, 2024 operating revenue of 4.222 billion yuan, and 1,151 employees. Nineteen newly grid-connected new-energy projects added 1.3382 million kW of capacity, and above-scale biomedicine output grew 32.8%.

PART 03

Industrial Robot & Automation Applications

Lijiang's automation is concentrated in two lines, monocrystalline silicon and green hydrogen; a tourism-dominated economy means local manufacturing stays small. In monocrystalline silicon, the 10 GW high-efficiency monocrystalline silicon rod project at LONGi Huaping phase III (Lijiang LONGi phase III) broke ground in March 2021 and was fired up in June 2023, with total investment of about 2.5 billion yuan and a large single-crystal workshop housing 800 single-crystal furnaces. In 2024 the machining workshop's digital integration retrofit was completed with 140 million yuan of investment, making monocrystalline silicon production intelligent across the whole process; the pickling capacity supporting N-type products was retrofitted at the same time, and the phase II and phase III machining workshops were also expanded. There is no public data on the number of automatic loading-unloading units, AGVs, and robotic arms configured on these lines (to be verified). In clean energy, 19 newly grid-connected new-energy projects added 1.3382 million kW in 2024, bringing total new-energy capacity to 2.2473 million kW; the province's first green-hydrogen zero-carbon smart factory began trial production. Such facilities are process-control and electrolytic hydrogen production equipment, a different category from industrial robots. In agricultural products and medicinal materials, the city produced 891,900 tons of fruit, 60,200 tons of Chinese medicinal materials, and 365,700 tons of vegetables and edible mushrooms in 2024; mango sorting and medicinal material washing and fresh processing already run on mechanized lines, but no industrial robot applications have been publicly reported (to be verified). There are no public statistics on the city's industrial robot base, annual new installations, or robot density (to be verified).
