Guiyang's industry likewise took shape during the Third Front construction. In that period, the state built or expanded in Guiyang and its near suburbs the Guiyang Iron and Steel Works, Guiyang Refractory Materials Plant, Guizhou Aluminum Plant, Guizhou Diesel Engine Works, Guiyang Tool Plant, Guiyang Foundry, Guiyang Wire and Cable Plant, and Guiyang Bearing Plant (which, together with Hongshan Bearing Plant, formed a major domestic bearing production base). It also completed an instruments and meters production base made up of seven specialized plants including the Yongqing Oscilloscope Plant, Yongsheng Electric Meter Plant and Yongheng Precision Electric Meter Plant; an abrasives and grinding tools base consisting of the Third, Sixth and Seventh Grinding Wheel Plants; and the Xintian and Chitian precision optical instrument plants, one of the country's three major optical instrument production bases. In chemicals, the state built the Guizhou Organic Chemical Plant, Guizhou Tire Plant, Guizhou Rubber Shoes Plant and Guizhou Rubber Fittings Plant. Before the Third Front construction, Guizhou had virtually no machinery manufacturing capability; these projects turned Guiyang into a comprehensive industrial city spanning multiple categories. In June 1996, China Zhenhua's headquarters and core R&D entities relocated from Duyun as a whole to the Xintian Park of the Guiyang High-Tech Zone, completing the Third Front relocation. On January 6, 2014, the State Council issued the "Reply on Agreeing to Establish the Guizhou Gui'an New Area" (Guo Han [2014] No. 3). Gui'an New Area sits at the junction of Guiyang and Anshun, covering 20 townships in 4 counties (cities, districts), with a planned controlled area of 1,795 square kilometers. Guiyang's industry thereby formed three incremental platforms: the old urban area, the high-tech zone-ETDZ, and Gui'an New Area.

In 2024, Guiyang's GDP was 577.741 billion yuan, up 6.0%; total industrial value added was 117.632 billion yuan, up 9.1%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 9.7%. Value added of the six key industries grew 18.0%, accounting for 49.3% of the city's above-scale industrial value added: phosphorus and phosphorus chemicals 27.5%, aluminum and aluminum processing 25.3%, electronic information manufacturing 22.0%, equipment manufacturing 16.7%, health and pharmaceuticals 5.4%, and eco-specialty foods 1.9%; tobacco products still accounted for 30.8%. The city had 894 above-scale industrial enterprises, with operating revenue of 312.801 billion yuan, up 10.4%, and total profits of 28.485 billion yuan, up 17.1%. Automobile output reached 142,800 units, up 214.7% (including 102,200 NEVs); chili products reached 195,700 tons, up 18.2%. In Gui'an New Area, above-scale industrial value added grew more than 40%, computing power reached 53.12 EFLOPS with intelligent computing accounting for 95.6%; from January to November 2025, Gui'an New Area's above-scale industrial value added grew 58.1%, the three leading industries completed above-scale gross industrial output value of 23.778 billion yuan, up 62%, and the concentration of leading industries rose from 71.3% at the start of the year to 76.9%. Representative enterprises include Guizhou Tire, China Zhenhua, Guiyang Hisense, Hangyu Technology, Jonyang Heavy Industry and Hankers.

On the industrial side, activity centers on tires, smart inspection in phosphorus chemicals, aviation parts and robot body manufacturing. Guizhou Tire is the province's first fully 5G-connected factory; after adopting a fully automated integrated bead forming system, it cut labor by 50%, reduced transfer time by 90% and raised production efficiency by 60%, producing one tire every 25 seconds. In 2025 it was named a World Economic Forum "Lighthouse Factory". In phosphorus chemicals, Guizhou Phosphate Group introduced industrial-grade 5G private networks at its Guiyang, Xifeng and Kaiyang bases; drones and quadruped robot dogs conduct three-dimensional inspection of plant areas, with data sent back over 5G to a digital twin platform, improving efficiency by about 30% and cutting staff by 20% to 25%. In aviation parts, Hangyu Technology built China's first fully automated production line for aviation ring forgings and was named a MIIT smart manufacturing demonstration factory in 2023; Jonyang Heavy Industry now has the capability to manufacture, sell, install and repair industrial robots. On the robot body side, the Gui'an Robot Innovation Industrial Park (Gui'an Development - Optics Valley Intelligent Computing Industrial Park) has attracted companies such as Weimai'er (VMR) and Youdi (UDI Robot). Weimai'er signed in December 2024 and rolled out its first latent handling robot in January 2025; full-year output is expected at about 1,500 units, targeting discrete manufacturing segments such as 3C electronics and lithium batteries. In agriculture, Guiyang's primary industry value added was 21.517 billion yuan in 2024; no public data are yet available on intelligent sorting in tea gardens and orchards or on packaging automation (to be verified). No public statistics exist on the city's installed industrial robot base, annual new installations or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers, IFR basis) (to be verified).
