Zunyi was Guizhou's aerospace industry base of the Third Front construction. In the summer and autumn of 1964, the state designated national defense industry as the core of Guizhou's Third Front construction, with Base 061 (aerospace) located in Zunyi, responsible for the research, design and production of missiles and rockets. By the end of 1978, Base 061 under the Eighth Machine Building Industry General Bureau and its 36 affiliated units had been completed. In the same period, the Changzheng Electric Appliance production base was built, consisting of 11 specialized plants including Changzheng Electric Appliance Plants No. 1, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10 and the explosion-proof appliance plant; it became one of the country's five major low-voltage appliance production bases. In chemicals, the Zunyi Alkali Plant was expanded and the Chishui Natural Gas Chemical Fertilizer Plant was newly built; in non-ferrous metallurgy, the Zunyi Titanium Plant underwent large-scale expansion and renovation. The Third Front relocation brought tens of thousands of researchers and engineering technicians, gradually turning Zunyi into an industrial city defined by aerospace and emerging industries. On the baijiu side, between November 1951 and 1953 the Renhuai county government successively merged the Chengyi, Ronghe and Hengxing distilleries in Maotai town into the state-owned Moutai Distillery, which became an enterprise directly under the Guizhou Provincial Department of Industry in August 1952. From 1964 to 1966, a research team led by veteran Moutai master brewer Li Xingfa scientifically distinguished three typical liquor bodies — sauce-aroma, cellar-bottom and pure-sweet — for the first time, laying the foundation for naming the sauce-aroma baijiu category.

In 2024, Zunyi's GDP reached 502.72 billion yuan, up 5.7%; above-scale industrial value added grew 8.1%, and above-scale industrial enterprises' operating revenue was 216.8 billion yuan, up 5.5%. The industrial structure follows a "1+2" pattern: the baijiu industry achieved an output value of 140.8 billion yuan; resource deep-processing and related industries achieved 40 billion yuan; and equipment manufacturing and related industries, centered on aerospace equipment, achieved 48 billion yuan. The three major industries of baijiu, basic materials and advanced equipment manufacturing accounted for 84% of value added. Renhuai City's 2024 GDP was 197.018 billion yuan, up 6.3%, with industrial value added of 110.425 billion yuan, of which liquor and beverage manufacturing accounted for 99.2% of above-scale industrial value added; baijiu output was 168,100 kiloliters, down 7.6%. The city completed digital retrofits of 251 industrial enterprises and added 61 new above-scale industrial enterprises; Zunyi Aluminum released a large model for dynamic optimization prediction of complex electrolytic aluminum systems. The Renhuai Economic Development Zone was listed as a cultivation target for national-level ETDZ status, and the Wuzhengdao coal-power-aluminum circular economy industrial park was upgraded to a provincial-level ETDZ.

On the industrial side, the densest applications are in baijiu brewing and packaging. Tangzhuang Distillery's workshop is equipped with 72 still-charging robots that use infrared temperature measurement and centralized data control to spread grain at millimeter-level precision; the still-charging robots at Jing Brand Maotai Town Distillery use thermal imaging and ultrasound to detect fermented-grain temperature and material layer height respectively, paired with more than 120 meters of cooling-and-conveying plate chains to complete mixing, cooling and transfer; Jiuzhoudao Distillery introduced 3 fully automatic grain-moistening machines, raising raw-material water-absorption uniformity by 30% and brewing efficiency by 40%; Renhuai Jundian Distillery and Zhenzang Distillery each have fully automatic filling and packaging lines and palletizers; Yisenyuan Packaging's fully automatic liquor-box line produces 200,000 pieces a day, cutting labor costs by 70% and raising capacity by 60%. Guotai Distillery has broken its "12987" process into 274 steps and 1,508 indicators; the Renhuai Sauce-Aroma Baijiu Group's 300,000-ton smart liquor warehouse has installed a monitoring terminal on every jar, tracking quantity, temperature and humidity, and liquid level in real time. In aerospace equipment, the Zunyi Jingxing connector project built a CNC milling flexible unit in which one robot serves four machines for 24-hour unmanned loading and unloading, lifting annual capacity from 230,000 to 500,000 pieces. On the agricultural side, Guizhou's 2024 chili output was 4.7838 million tons, with Zunyi among the main producing areas; the Xiangzi chili industrial park tendered 2 sets of dedicated chili AI smart sorters for 2026, each with a capacity of 1 ton per hour and an impurity removal rate above 90%; in tea, Meitan tea enterprises have adopted smart sorting equipment developed by the Guizhou Institute of Electromechanical Research and Design, with third-party testing showing a 98% picking accuracy.
