PART 01

Industrialization History

When Qiandongnan Prefecture was established in 1956, its industry was virtually a blank: only scattered handicrafts such as wood processing, traditional papermaking, silver jewelry and embroidery, with capacity limited to simple farm tools like hoes and sickles. Gross industrial output value was just over 10 million yuan and there were fewer than 50 industrial enterprises. In the 1960s, the state's Third Front construction was laid out in Kaili. In 1965, the national 083 electronics industrial base settled in Kaili, and the Nanfeng Machinery Plant (Plant 830) broke ground in Erlong village, becoming China's first manufacturer of complete electronic computers. It developed and produced China's first large electronic computer, the DJS-121, and its computers once supported China's first artificial satellite, Dongfanghong-1. A batch of military-industrial enterprises followed, including the Changzheng Wireless Plant and the Hongzhou Wireless Plant (Plant 242). Hongzhou Wireless built the province's first black-and-white television production line, selling products across the southwest, northwest and Guangdong and Guangxi at an annual scale of several hundred thousand sets; Guizhou's first teleprinter was also born here. After 10 military-industrial enterprises settled in, supporting enterprises in glass, papermaking, cotton spinning, magnetic materials and other fields followed, and the prefecture for the first time built a complete supporting industrial chain. After reform and opening up, some Third Front enterprises relocated, restructured or halted production - for example, after the Hongyun Equipment Plant moved out, Shenzhen Weilin High-Tech set up Zhonghao Electronics on the original site, which later became the leading enterprise of the electronic information cluster in the Qiandongnan High-Tech Zone. In 2010, the prefecture launched a full-scale "industry-strengthening prefecture" campaign, and 15 industrial parks including Lubi and Taijiang were successively completed and put into use.

Current Industrial Development

In 2024, Qiandongnan Prefecture's GDP was 143.238 billion yuan, up 5.6%, with secondary industry value added of 31.196 billion yuan, up 9.2%; industrial value added was 20.505 billion yuan, up 13.9%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 18.2%, ranking first in the province, with light industry up 23.6% and heavy industry up 15.9%. By category, mining fell 2.4%, manufacturing grew 26.8%, and electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply grew 0.9%. Among major industries, electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing grew 62.9%, railway, shipbuilding, aerospace and other transport equipment manufacturing 59.7%, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling 56.7%, pharmaceutical manufacturing 27.2%, rubber and plastic products 21.9%, and food manufacturing 8.7%; wood processing and wood, bamboo, rattan, palm and straw products grew 6.9%, and agro-food processing 2.1%. Among the two leading industries with priority provincial support, silicon deep processing grew 106.9%. Major products: integrated circuits 846.5590 million units, up 261.7 times; flat glass 13.6907 million weight cases, up 160.5%; ten non-ferrous metals 286,200 tons, up 51.1%; alumina 1.2026 million tons, up 25.4%. Operating revenue of above-scale industrial enterprises was 41.601 billion yuan, up 12.2%. In 2025, prefecture-wide industrial investment grew 43.2%, the fastest in the province.

PART 03

Industrial Robot & Automation Applications

Qiandongnan's automation upgrades span three lines - glass, wood and ethnic specialty foods - with equipment centered on robotic arms, automated lines and intelligent controls. In glass, the photovoltaic glass workshop of Guizhou Qianbo Yongtai New Materials runs a fully automated production line: robotic arms handle the pick-and-place and transfer of PV glass, and products move along conveyors into packaging after system inspection. Kaili produced the province's first sheet of flat glass in 1984, built the province's first float glass line in 2013, and produced the province's first sheet of PV glass in 2024; the glass industrial park has gathered 23 upstream and downstream enterprises. In wood, Jianhe County Tianshengxiang Wood Intelligent Manufacturing has used a digital automated control system to shorten processing time from logs to boards from the traditional 2 to 3 months to four and a half hours, with annual OSB output of up to 400,000 cubic meters; the new plant of Majiang County Mubin Wood added two fully automated lines capable of cutting, sorting, board splicing and sanding and other fine processing, expected to add 20 million yuan to annual output value. In food, Majiang County Mingyang Food operates 18 fully automated intelligent production lines, and the intelligent automatic bagging line put into service in January 2026 raised production efficiency by more than 70% over the old lines, averaging 100,000 bags a day; Yaochuang Industrial Group's sour soup full-industry-chain project, with an investment of 350 million yuan, plans a 130,000-square-meter smart workshop cluster equipped with automated production lines and a sterile blending center. No public statistics exist on the prefecture's installed industrial robot base, annual new installations or robot density (to be verified).
