Kunming was the landing point of wartime relocated industry and the birthplace of Yunnan's modern machinery industry. After the full-scale war began in 1937, large numbers of factories and mines moved in; by 1940 the Kunming area had 80 major factories, forming four industrial districts at Haikou, Majie, Ciba, and Anning. The Central Machine Works was completed at Ciba on September 9, 1939, as China's first large state-owned machine-building plant; at the end of the war it had 623 machines and more than 2,500 employees. It was renamed the Kunming Machine Tool Plant in 1953, strategically reorganized by China General Technology Group in 2022, relocated wholesale to the Songming Yanglin ETDZ by the end of 2023, and surpassed 500 million yuan in revenue in 2024. The Central Electrical Apparatus Works came online at Majiezi in July 1939 and produced the first electrical conductor made in China; it was named Kunming Cable Group in 2009. The Ordnance Administration's No. 22 Arsenal was completed at Haikou in January 1939 and within three months built fully domestic 6x30 military binoculars; the former site is now the China Optical History Museum. In light industry, the Yunnan Provincial Economic Commission Textile Mill opened in 1937, and the Yudian Textile Company, founded in 1938, came online in 1940; the two mills produced a combined 14,200 tons of cotton yarn and 9.855 million meters of cotton cloth. During the Third Front period, military-background enterprises such as Kunming Shipbuilding Equipment Group (prepared in 1969, predecessor the Yunnan Sixth Machinery Industry Bureau) were added, forming the second strand of Kunming's equipment manufacturing.

In 2024, Kunming's GDP was 827.522 billion yuan, up 4.0%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 7.0%, 3.7 percentage points above the provincial average. Equipment manufacturing grew 46.0%, chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing grew 8.0%, pharmaceutical manufacturing grew 3.6%, and the metallurgical industry fell 25.7%. High-tech manufacturing value added grew 47.3%, accounting for 17.7% of above-scale industry, up 3.6 percentage points year on year; 204 enterprises were newly promoted to above-scale status. In industry size, the city's biomedicine sector surpassed 150 billion yuan in revenue in 2024, advanced equipment manufacturing exceeded 63 billion yuan, chemicals and metallurgy posted industrial output of 110 billion yuan and 106 billion yuan respectively, and the full tobacco industry chain neared 100 billion yuan in revenue. The Central Yunnan Rare and Precious Metals Cluster was selected as a national advanced manufacturing cluster, Yunnan's first. Machine tools are the fastest-growing segment: by the end of 2025 the city had 27 above-scale machine tool producers with output of 2.529 billion yuan, up 25.05% year on year; Songming County alone clusters 15 of them with output of 1.293 billion yuan, or 51.1% of the city total; and the Yanglin ETDZ CNC machine tool chain posted 7.427 billion yuan in gross output with 134 chain enterprises. General Technology Kunming Machine Tool ranks first nationally in market share for large CNC floor-type milling-boring machines, and Kunming Taigong holds a 40% share in CNC machine tool bare units. In 2024 the city's industrial technical transformation investment grew about 12% year on year, industrial investment accounted for 26.3%, and Kunming was selected among the first batch of national pilot cities for SME digital transformation.

Kunming's automation demand centers on three lines: equipment manufacturing, metallurgy, and biomedicine. In equipment manufacturing, the Kunming Machine Tool Plant relocated wholesale to the Songming Yanglin ETDZ in late 2023; it launched a 428-million-yuan precision milling-boring machine project in 2025 and added another 60 million yuan in 2026 for ultra-precision machine tool industrialization; its TGK42125 double-column vertical coordinate boring machine achieves 2.5-micron positioning accuracy on its linear axes. In metallurgy, the electrolytic plant workshop of Southwest Copper's relocation project in the Anning Industrial Park runs almost entirely on automated, smart production lines, with robotic arms replacing line workers and comprehensive energy consumption 20% below the industry benchmark. In pharmaceuticals and food, Yunnan Baiyao's smart factory came online in September 2019 and was named a "Global Lighthouse Factory" by the World Economic Forum in September 2025, the first in Yunnan and the world's first for traditional Chinese medicine health products; its six filling-and-packaging lines produce 510 toothpaste tubes per minute, palletizing robots handle 4,000 items per hour, and the plant has an automated warehouse with capacity above 500,000 items. In agriculture, the Jinning Yuntianhua Huajianpu post-harvest processing center grades with infrared imaging and bundles automatically; Yunnan Abunda Horticulture's Zhonghepu base in Jinning has rolled out automated driverless transport vehicles for unmanned transfer from flower fields to the post-harvest center; and the Chenggong Dounan International Flower Industry Park traded 14.176 billion stems worth 11.574 billion yuan in 2024, with sorting at the auction stage still manual; a smart sorting project launched in January 2026. There are no public statistics on the city's industrial robot base, annual new installations, or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers, IFR basis) (to be verified).
