>Industrialization History
Diqing's modern industry began with hydropower and forestry. The first power station, with 48 kW of installed capacity, was completed in 1958, and hydropower developed steadily thereafter. The Siwei Hydropower Station, started in 1963 and delivered by National Day 1965, was the prefecture's first proper hydropower station, with 424 kW of capacity; the Weixi Xinle Hydropower Station was completed in 1974 with 2,000 kW. By the end of 2000 the prefecture had 69 hydropower stations with combined capacity of 152,000 kW. In forestry, in the early 1950s state forest enterprises from the Northeast relocated wholesale, machines and workers alike, to the Jinsha River basin. The provincially administered Zhongdian Forestry Bureau was established in 1972, followed by the prefectural timber company and the Zhongdian County timber company. At its peak, a forestry workforce of nearly 5,000 supported the core finances of the prefecture and counties; Diqing's annual "timber revenue" of more than 62 million yuan at one point accounted for 80% of prefectural fiscal income. Logging began to be reduced after the Forest Law took effect in 1984, and on September 1, 1998, the prefecture banned all logging of natural forests; forest enterprises were either dissolved or converted to other lines of business. The replacement path was hydropower: funds were raised in 1985 to build the Chongjianghe power station (the fifth of the eight cascade stations on the Shuduogang River), which came online in 1990. In mining, Diqing sits in the heart of the Sanjiang metallogenic belt, where more than 30 kinds of mineral deposits including copper, iron, and lead-zinc have been found. The Yangla, Pulang, and Hongshan copper mines reach large or medium scale, with proven copper metal reserves of over 5 million tons. In 2005 the prefecture's total mining output was 417.91 million yuan; in 2007 mining output was 800 million yuan; in 2009 total mining revenue reached 1.1 billion yuan.
Current Industrial Development
In 2024, Diqing Prefecture's GDP was 30.701 billion yuan, up 0.4%. Above-scale industrial value added was 5.967 billion yuan, up 8.8%; total industrial value added was 7.149 billion yuan, up 7%; and industrial investment was 9.934 billion yuan, up 13.9%. Industry is led by two pillars, green energy and green mining. By the end of 2024 the prefecture's installed power capacity reached 5.697 million kW; total societal electricity generation in 2024 was 26.24 billion kWh; green energy value added was 4.67 billion yuan, or 15.2% of GDP; and the non-fossil share of energy consumption was 52.2%, 5.6 percentage points above the provincial average. The Tuoba Hydropower Station brought all of its units online, and phase I of the Nagu photovoltaic station, the world's highest-altitude PV plant, was grid-connected in Deqin County on December 24, 2024, at a maximum elevation above 5,240 meters, with expected average annual generation of 158 million kWh. In mining, cumulative mining investment during the 14th Five-Year Plan period was 1.16 billion yuan; total mining output reached 4.6 billion yuan, up 42% from the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan, with cumulative tax revenue of 2.5 billion yuan. The Linong section modification project at the Yangla copper mine and the southern block cutting project of the first mining area in the Pulang copper mine phase I mining-and-beneficiation works were completed and commissioned. In agriculture and culture-tourism, total agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, and fishery output in 2024 was 3.518 billion yuan; five wild edible mushroom (matsutake) conservation and propagation bases were consolidated and upgraded; and walnut and olive planting covered 51,906.67 hectares.
Industrial Robot & Automation Applications
Diqing has the smallest manufacturing base among Yunnan's 16 prefectures and cities. Automation is concentrated in 5G and remote operation at mines, while agricultural product processing remains mechanized rather than robotized. In mining, the 5G smart mine at the Pulang copper mine of Yunnan Diqing Nonferrous Metals Co., Ltd. has been completed; it is described as the country's first underground nonferrous mine with 5G industrial applications and the first 5G smart mine in a high-altitude area. The Linong section modification project at the Yangla copper mine and the southern block cutting project of the Pulang phase I first mining area were completed and commissioned around the same time. There is no public data on the specific equipment configuration at these mines, such as driverless haul trucks, rock-drilling jumbos, and inspection robots (to be verified). In hydropower, the Tuoba Hydropower Station brought all units online; new units such as those at the Nagu photovoltaic station use computer monitoring and remote centralized control, which is standard plant configuration and falls outside the industrial robot category. In specialty agricultural products, in 2024 the prefecture consolidated and upgraded five wild edible mushroom (matsutake) conservation and propagation bases, expanded edible mushroom planting to 800 hectares, built or upgraded 466.67 hectares of Chinese medicinal material bases, and planted 51,906.67 hectares of walnuts and olives. Washing, grading, and drying of matsutake, medicinal materials, walnuts, and grapes rely mainly on standalone equipment; the prefecture promotes fresh processing and deep processing of medicinal materials, but no industrial robot applications have been reported (to be verified). There are no public statistics on the prefecture's industrial robot base, annual new installations, or robot density (to be verified).
