Nanchong's industry started almost from scratch in the early years of the People's Republic. Gross industrial output in 1957 was 205 million yuan, 5.6 times the 1949 level. In March 1958 the Ministry of Petroleum launched the PRC's first oil campaign in central Sichuan, and the Sichuan Petroleum Institute (today's Southwest Petroleum University) was located in Nanchong, seat of the campaign headquarters; the same year the ministry invested 13.27 million yuan to build the Nanchong Refinery with a 500,000-ton crude-processing capacity. It entered production at the end of 1959, becoming the only crude-oil producer in southwest China. During the Third Front period, the Ministry of Petroleum merged the Hechuan and Chongqing military oil plants with the Nanchong Refinery to form the Southwest Third Front special military oil production base, with 13 production units built in 1965–1967; the plant's crude throughput topped 1 million tons in 2010 before it was closed down. In October 1970 the prefecture's Yong'an Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant, built with an investment of 3.6 million yuan, entered production; in June 1971 the Nanchong Prefecture Cotton Mill was completed and commissioned. In silk, the Liuhe Group, founded in 1912, is the longest-surviving renowned silk enterprise in China. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Yan'an Road in Shunqing District gathered the Dongfeng Nanchong Internal Combustion Engine Plant, the Nanchong Prefecture Canned Food Plant and the Nanchong Silk Plant, a genuine "one-street industry belt." The Nanchong Refinery of the Third Front era was southwest China's only crude-oil producer; after 13 production units were built in 1965–1967 and crude throughput exceeded 1 million tons in 2010, it was shut down. Its equipment and skilled workers spilled over, becoming an important source of local machinery-processing and automation-retrofit talent.

In Nanchong, home of this site, GDP reached 290.176 billion yuan in 2025, up 3.3%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 4.6%. Value added grew in 17 of 33 major industry categories, with railway, shipbuilding, aerospace and other transport equipment manufacturing up 63.1% and automobile manufacturing 21.2%; high-tech manufacturing value added grew 21.4%. Above-scale industrial enterprises recorded operating revenue of 71.44 billion yuan, up 12.3%, and total profit of 1.58 billion yuan, up 41.1%. The "3+2+3" industrial system comprises pillar industries of automobiles and parts, chemicals and light textiles, and food and medicine; growth industries of electronic information and high-end equipment manufacturing; and new tracks of AI, hydrogen energy and the low-altitude economy. Automobiles and parts include 216 above-scale enterprises, with 2025 output of 16.389 billion yuan, up 4.6%; the chain leader is Geely Sichuan Commercial Vehicle. Electronic information centers on Sanhuan Electronics, whose ceramic ferrules and ceramic substrates hold global market shares above 80% and 67% respectively. High-end equipment manufacturing posted output of 10.84 billion yuan in January–September, up 24.3%, and the Xichong vacuum-equipment cluster became a national-level characteristic industrial cluster for SMEs. The Yilong ETDZ in Yilong County under the city's jurisdiction is the main carrier of county industry. County industry in Yilong centers on agricultural product processing, machinery manufacturing and textiles and garments, with the Yilong ETDZ as the main carrier; in 2025 Nanchong marketed 5.71 million hogs, and its citrus and sericulture bases rank among the province's largest. Automation retrofits of agricultural-processing equipment are the main increment of county industry (county-level sectoral output to be verified).

Nanchong's automation retrofits center on automobiles and parts and are now transitioning from single-point equipment to whole-line transformation. In the Geely Sichuan Commercial Vehicle smart factory, AGVs shuttle materials and robotic arms perform precision welding; the new N72 model added nearly 800 million yuan in output from layout to volume production. Suppliers are following: Sichuan Jianglong Auto Parts' 13,000-square-meter intelligent workshop entered production in December 2025, with nearly 20 automated machines linked together and robotic arms handling welding and assembly, forming annual capacity of 10,000 sets of bus interior parts; Phase 1 of the Airuite new-energy sanitation-vehicle park is in operation, with a flexible line able to roll off a new vehicle in as little as 40 minutes. In chemicals and materials, the capacity utilization rate at Yongying New Materials' smart control center has passed 90%. Across the board: in 2025 Nanchong added 52 specialized and innovative enterprises, 35 projects were entered into the provincial manufacturing smart-upgrading and digital-transformation database, and support policies were issued, including 18 measures for manufacturing, nine for hydrogen energy and eight for AI. In Gaoping District, Pinxin Feed invested nearly 2 million yuan in equipment upgrades to automate production. Nanchong is Sichuan's No. 1 hog city (5.71 million head marketed in 2025). No authoritative statistics on the scale of Nanchong's local complete-robot manufacturing and system-integration industry have been found through public channels (to be verified). Agriculture and agricultural product processing are Nanchong's most recognizable automation scenarios: the multifunctional four-channel fruit and vegetable sorter in Jialing District includes a machine-vision system, weigh sensors and an internal-quality scanner, sorting 20 tons of citrus an hour with non-destructive sugar measurement; the smart silkworm-rearing line of Nanchong Sericulture Equipment Research Co., Ltd. is 90% automated end to end — feeding 70 sheets of silkworm paper was compressed from 15 workers and four hours to four workers and 2.5 hours, a sixfold efficiency gain.
