Luzhou's industrialization follows two main threads: famous liquor and Third Front construction. In September 1952, Luzhou Laojiao won the first "Famous Chinese Liquor" title, and it is the only strong-aroma baijiu to hold the national famous-liquor award five times in a row. From 1964, thanks to its natural gas, Yangtze River shipping and concealed location, Luzhou became a Third Front construction priority in Sichuan. Machinery centered on the "Chang Three Plants" — the Changjiang Excavator Plant, the Changjiang Crane Plant and the Changjiang Hydraulic Parts Plant. In May 1965 the Fushun Excavator Plant was split in two, and 1,358 workers brought 273 pieces of equipment by special train to Luzhou to prepare the Changjiang Excavator Plant; in November 1964 the Luzhou General Machinery Plant was expanded into the Changjiang Hydraulic Parts Plant, becoming China's earliest professional hydraulic-parts factory. The chemical industry was anchored by natural-gas chemicals: construction of the Sichuan Luzhou Natural Gas Chemical Plant began in August 1964 — China's earliest large fertilizer enterprise to introduce a complete set of advanced international technology and use natural gas as feedstock. In defense industry, the Southern Sichuan Aviation Industry School was renamed state-owned Plant 692 in 1970 (today the Southern Sichuan Machinery Plant of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation), the only enterprise developing and producing pyrotechnic products for China's aerospace and aviation fields. Together with the famous liquor industry, the chemical and machinery sectors formed during Third Front construction became the three pillars of Luzhou's economy. The siting logic was clear: Luzhou offered natural gas, Yangtze shipping and the concealment of southern Sichuan's hills, satisfying the layout requirements of "close to the mountains, dispersed, and in caves," so machinery, chemicals and aerospace pyrotechnics all landed in the same period.

In 2025, Luzhou's GDP reached 300.429 billion yuan, up 6.4%, crossing 300 billion yuan for the first time. Industrial value added was 107.53 billion yuan, up 6.2%, contributing 34.5% to economic growth. At year-end there were 891 above-scale industrial enterprises, and full-year above-scale industrial value added grew 5.7%. Value added grew in 24 of 33 major industry categories: oil and natural gas extraction up 40.3%, agricultural and sideline food processing 30.8%, and chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing 11.4%, while liquor, beverage and refined tea manufacturing grew only 1.0%. Above-scale industrial enterprises recorded operating revenue of 156.09 billion yuan, down 0.7% — with liquor manufacturing revenue down 10.9% — and total profit of 16.69 billion yuan, down 10.4%. Above-scale baijiu enterprises still account for more than a third of operating revenue, and Luzhou Laojiao alone contributes 78% of the total profit of the city's above-scale industrial enterprises, highlighting the risk of a single-structure economy. In September 2025 Luzhou adjusted its framework into "5+5" industry chains: five key manufacturing chains — baijiu, energy and chemical new materials, equipment manufacturing, medical health (including nuclear medicine), and bamboo — plus five key integration chains such as the digital economy, modern logistics and the low-altitude economy. Within the "5+5" chains formed in September 2025, the three segments of baijiu, energy and chemical new materials, and equipment manufacturing absorbed the vast majority of technological-transformation investment.

Luzhou's automation is most concentrated in baijiu brewing and packaging. The smart packaging center at Luzhou Laojiao's Huangyi Brewing Eco-Park covers more than 180,000 square meters of floor space with a total investment of about 2.136 billion yuan. Its five high-speed automated filling lines average 15,000 bottles per hour, with design speeds above 18,000; production efficiency doubled, operating costs fell 68.85%, and labor was cut 80%–90% (from 150 workers to 10). It was rated among the first batch of national "excellent-level smart factories" and is being built to the standard of the baijiu industry's first Lighthouse Factory. In brewing, Luzhou Laojiao's self-developed steamer-loading robot uses online temperature measurement and control, steam-flow control and precise loading-speed regulation to reproduce "light, even spreading and steam-sensing loading"; an automated grain-mixing system completes in two minutes a process that once took 40. On the chemical side, the Lutianhua Chemical Industrial Park was selected in April 2025 as a national "10-gigabit park" pilot, where smart inspection robots reach the liquid-ammonia tank farm in place of manual monitoring. The city has built the country's first baijiu industry big-data platform and completed digital diagnostics for 107 baijiu industry-chain enterprises; but only 30% of above-scale liquor enterprises have undertaken smart upgrading and digital transformation, leaving substantial room to raise the share among SMEs. By equipment, baijiu packaging lines rely mainly on parallel Delta robots for sorting, six-axis palletizing robots, AGVs and machine-vision inspection, automating the full filling–capping–inspection–cartoning–case-packing process; the smart automated warehouse in Langjiu's strong- and sauce-aroma production area has 12 robotic arms, 27 stacker cranes and six automatic sorting machines, with throughput above 20,000 cases per hour.
