Between 1965 and 1969, ten Third Front enterprises broke ground in Guang'an: Mingguang (Plant 338), Huaguang (Plant 308), Jinguang (Plant 268), Hongguang (Plant 348), Yongguang (Plant 398), Xingguang (Plant 598), Jianghua (Plant 354), Changcheng (Plant 9846), Liaoyuan (Plant 9821) and Xibo (Plant 157). Together they occupied 3,658 mu (1 mu ≈ 0.067 hectare) with 980,000 square meters of total floor space. Apart from Xibo and Yongguang on the banks of the Jialing and Qu rivers, the other eight were all located in the Huaying Mountains, mainly producing military optical instruments and forming the Huaying Mountain Optical Instrument Production Base — a key supporting base for Chongqing's conventional-weapons base. The ten enterprises won 30 quality-product awards at or above the provincial and ministerial level and 81 science-and-technology achievements; in 1974 they produced China's first-generation military optical rangefinder and a high-precision tracking and testing instrument for aerospace vehicles. Third Front construction directly gave birth to Huaying: the Huaying Worker-Peasant Demonstration District was established in 1978 and converted to a city in 1985. From 1991 to 2002, eight military-industrial enterprises relocated one after another, taking away tens of thousands of machines and equipment sets and nearly 20,000 skilled workers. The local economy then leaned on "one black (coal) and one white (cement)" until Huaying was listed in 2009 among the second batch of national transition pilots for resource-depleted cities, shifting toward electronic information and basalt-fiber new materials.

In 2025, Guang'an's GDP reached 170.09 billion yuan, up 5.7%. Industrial value added was 34.18 billion yuan, up 6.8%, accounting for 20.1% of GDP. There were 649 above-scale industrial enterprises; above-scale industrial value added grew 9.3% (light industry 17.0%, heavy industry 7.8%), and 41 above-scale industrial enterprises were newly cultivated. Output grew in 22 of 34 major industry categories: coal mining and washing up 26.7%, gas production and supply 19.1%, comprehensive utilization of waste resources 13.6%, pharmaceutical manufacturing 10.5%, and chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing 8.8%. The "331" advantaged and characteristic industries posted total output of 69.17 billion yuan, 75.3% of above-scale industry — strengthening the three advantaged industries of green chemicals, equipment manufacturing and medical health, and developing the three characteristic industries of electronic information, advanced materials, and food and light textiles. Industrial tax revenue was 2.97 billion yuan, 32.3% of citywide tax revenue, and industrial electricity consumption was 5.18 billion kWh. Seven of the city's eight industrial concentration zones are provincial-level or above development zones, including two provincial-level chemical industry parks. Equipment manufacturing is an important supporting base for Chongqing's "two-vehicle" industries; in January 2026, the Times Chang'an 25 GWh power-battery base, with a total investment of 5.5 billion yuan, was established in the Sichuan–Chongqing Gaozhu New Area.

Guang'an has cumulatively pushed 280 enterprises through smart upgrading and digital transformation, building 136 intelligent production lines, 28 digital workshops and one smart factory. Twenty-five projects received 76.81 million yuan from the first batch of "smart upgrading and digital transformation" funds, supporting 54 enterprises in "replacing workers with machines, replacing equipment cores, and replacing production lines"; in 2025, 135 enterprises carried out smart upgrading and digital transformation, seventh highest in the province. On the equipment and electronics side, Lihong Electronics in Qianfeng District built the world's first Industry 4.0 intelligent 5G ultra-thin vapor-chamber production line, and its products hold a 16% share of the global market; Yitian Technology in Huaying switched to metal housings in 2022, buying more than 300 machines and equipment sets including CNC machines, robots and stamping presses, with AGV carts delivering materials in the CNC workshop. On the light-textile and food side, Sanfeng Digital-Intelligent Textile in Qianfeng has built an integrated, data-driven, automated full-process production system producing 100 million meters of green outdoor-equipment fabric a year, with a 21% domestic market share; Muzhi Textile operates 1,000 integrated computerized flat-knitting machines, where one worker can tend 18–25 machines, lifting efficiency 50% and cutting costs 20%; after its smart upgrade, CR Snow Breweries' Guang'an factory reduced energy consumption per kiloliter of beer from 700 MJ to about 450 MJ. On the building-materials side, the Shudao pavement-materials base uses unmanned forklifts plus robot scanning, recognition and grasping and fully automatic unpacking machines, cutting the daily workforce from 15 to 6 and energy consumption by 20%. No authoritative statistics on Guang'an's industrial-robot holdings or robot density have been found through public channels (to be verified).
