Mianyang's modern industry began with the electronics-industry layout of the First Five-Year Plan period. As compiled by Mianyang Daily, between October 1958 and December 1960 four defense and military-industrial enterprises — the Huafeng Radio Equipment Plant (Plant 796), the Changhong Machine Plant (Plant 780, today's Changhong Holding Group), the Fujiang Machine Plant (Plant 783, today's Jiuzhou Group) and the Fujiang Wired Electric Plant (Plant 730) — were built one after another in Mianyang's urban area, forming an electronics-industry group centered on the "four plants" along Yuejin Road. After Third Front construction launched in 1964, the central government approved the China Academy of Engineering Physics' research base in Mianyang in May 1965; in December of that year the Aerodynamics Research Institute of the Third Ministry of Machine Building Industry moved from Luoyang to Mianyang, and the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center was formed in 1968. According to the CPC Municipal Committee's Party History Research Office, by the late 1970s the state's Third Front projects in Mianyang were essentially completed, with total investment exceeding 2 billion yuan at the time. After reform and opening up, Mianyang began exploring "invigorating Mianyang through science and technology" in 1986 and was listed in October 1991 as a national pilot city for "invigorating the city through military-to-civilian science and technology"; in September 2000 the central government announced the construction of Mianyang Science City, and in July 2001 the State Council approved the "Outline for the Development of Mianyang Science City." These enterprises clustered on both sides of Yuejin Road in the urban area — known locally as the "Yuejin Road Four Plants" — with factory compounds and staff residential areas contiguous, a direct cause of Mianyang's urban layout; worker hospitals, staff schools and technical schools were built around them, forming the later reserve of industrial workers and technical talent.

In 2025, Mianyang's GDP reached 460.066 billion yuan, up 6.5%, second in the province. Above-scale industrial value added grew 6.5%, and the product sales rate was 95.1%. Output grew in 22 of 38 major industry categories: chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing up 17.5%, electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing 14.0%, and computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing 11.1%; above-scale high-tech manufacturing output grew 10.4%. According to the Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, Mianyang's gross above-scale industrial output and total industrial value added stepped onto the new tiers of 300 billion yuan and 100 billion yuan respectively in 2025; output of the five key advantaged industries grew 8.7%, and its total number of specialized and innovative "little giant" enterprises ranks first among non-provincial-capital cities in western China. Mianyang has 38 of the 41 major industrial categories, with electronic information, advanced materials and equipment manufacturing as leading industries, and new displays, nuclear technology applications, laser technology applications and robotics as emerging industries; ten-billion-yuan-class projects such as BOE's Gen 6 line and HKC's Gen 8.6 TFT-LCD line have been completed and put into production. At the enterprise level, the 100-billion-yuan-class Changhong Group and the 10-billion-yuan-class Jiuzhou Group rank 11th and 29th among China's top 100 electronic information enterprises. Industrial carriers are mainly the Mianyang High-Tech Zone, the ETDZ and the Science City New Area, with the New Area focusing on AI, robotics and the low-altitude economy. Robotics is listed as one of four emerging industries; in 2025 the AI Smart Manufacturing Industrial Park and the Robot Smart Manufacturing Industrial Park in the Science City New Area entered service one after another.

Mianyang's automation retrofits use Changhong as the model and spill over into electronic information and equipment manufacturing. Changhong's smart display factory, built on an "industrial robot +" approach, developed in house fully automated equipment for key processes such as feeding, machining, assembly and palletizing; the CNC-ization rate of key processes reached 100%, efficiency rose 65%, the product defect rate fell 76%, and order delivery was shortened from 49 days to 11. In 2025 it was rated among the country's first batch of excellent-level smart factories. Its self-developed screw-tightening robot, equipped with machine vision, finds hole positions and adjusts torque on its own, with changeovers in just two minutes; in the air-conditioner assembly workshop it lifted screw-fastening efficiency 40% and pushed the defect rate below 0.01%. Changhong Holding Group has built one of the country's first excellent-level smart factories and 13 advanced-level smart factories, and leads a benchmark base for "AI + manufacturing" application scenarios, having served more than 30 key enterprises including Huafeng Technology, Meiling and Aichuang. In the Science City New Area, the AI Smart Manufacturing Industrial Park and the Robot Smart Manufacturing Industrial Park entered service in 2025, gathering more than 60 AI enterprises with operating revenue of 25.929 billion yuan. On policy, Mianyang won two national pilots in 2025 — new-type technological transformation for manufacturing and digital transformation for SMEs. In agriculture and agricultural product processing, Taiwo Xiang Food's intelligent fully automatic rice line in Santai County, with annual capacity of 50,000 tons, entered production in September 2022; all 18 processes from hulling to bagging run unmanned, the workload once requiring more than 300 workers is now handled by one line controller, and palletizing robots stack 15 tons per hour.
