PART 01

Industrialization History

Chengdu's modern industry grew out of overlapping First Five-Year Plan and Third Front construction projects sited in the eastern suburbs. The Jinjiang Electric Machinery Plant (Plant 784) was prepared in 1953 as one of the 156 key Soviet-aided projects and started production in December 1958; its main products were complete radar sets, and it produced China's first altimetric radar, the B43. In 1958, Plant 420 (Xindu Machinery Plant) was established at Shuangqiaozi, relocated almost wholesale from Shenyang Plant 111 with about 4,000 employees crossing seven provinces and municipalities into Sichuan, to produce WP-6 turbojet engines; its companion Plant 132 (Chengdu Emei Machinery Plant) built aircraft. Also founded that year were the Hongguang Electron Tube Plant (Plant 773, producing oscilloscope tubes and picture tubes) and the Hongming Radio Components Plant (Plant 715, producing resistors and capacitors). Hongguang produced China's first black-and-white picture tube and first projection picture tube, giving rise to the saying "Shougang in the north, Hongguang in the south". The eastern suburbs gathered 253 large and medium-sized enterprises under central, provincial and municipal authorities, forming one of the country's three major electronics industry bases. At the turn of this century Chengdu carried out its "eastward adjustment", and the old eastern-suburb factory districts phased out one after another; in 2009 the former Hongguang Electron Tube Plant site was preserved and converted into "Eastern Suburb Memory". Externally these factories were all identified by "mailbox" code names (such as "Mailbox 35" and "Plant 4431"), typical of the Third Front secrecy system; the compounds came with staff dormitories, schools for employees' children and hospitals, forming closed "work-unit societies" — and nurturing Chengdu's earliest cohorts of machining and assembly technicians.

PART 02

Current Industrial Development

In 2025, Chengdu's GDP reached 2,476.36 billion yuan, up 5.8%; industrial value added was 516.34 billion yuan, up 7.3%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 7.0%. Among 37 major industry categories, 25 posted value-added growth: computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing grew 10.0%, automobile manufacturing 17.8%, and electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing 10.8%; above-scale high-tech manufacturing value added grew 8.9%. The combined value added of the five advanced manufacturing industries grew 8.1%, of which equipment manufacturing grew 16.1%, electronic information 9.8%, pharmaceuticals and health 3.3%, and green food 1.4%. Among main products, automobiles reached 934,000 units, up 23.8%; integrated circuits 10.84 billion units, up 23.3%; and NEV output grew 181.0%. In industrial organization, Chengdu has cultivated two trillion-yuan-level industrial clusters (electronic information and equipment manufacturing) and 5 national-level advanced manufacturing clusters, ranking second among sub-provincial cities in the number of national-level clusters; by year-end high-tech enterprises exceeded 15,000, with high-tech industry operating revenue of 1,637.03 billion yuan; industrial investment grew 19.7%. The Chengdu ETDZ is the main carrier for complete vehicles and components. Robot body manufacturing and system integration supply is concentrated in the Chengdu Robot Industrial Park in Chenghua District: the park has gathered 75 upstream and downstream industrial robot enterprises, its robot industry revenue accounts for one-third of the city's total, and its intelligent robot cluster was rated a provincial-level characteristic industrial cluster for SMEs.

PART 03

Industrial Robot & Automation Applications

Chengdu's automation retrofits are concentrated in automobiles, electronics and electrical equipment. As of 2025, the city has cumulatively pushed 3,979 above-scale industrial enterprises to complete smart retrofits, cultivating 130 smart factories and 275 digital workshops; 6 enterprises including Kelun Pharmaceutical and Tongwei Solar were selected as MIIT excellence-level smart factories, and AVIC Chengfei made the first batch of the leading-level smart factory cultivation list. Sichuan Lynk & Co is the most publicly documented case: it has over 600 manufacturing robots and over 600 AGV logistics robots; its welding shop runs more than 500 robots with 100% of weld points automated; stamping and welding shops exceed a 95% automation rate; and two shifts produce more than 1,100 vehicles a day. In embodied intelligence, the city's embodied-intelligence robot industry reached 5.8 billion yuan in 2025, up 16% year on year, and Zhiyuan Innovation's Southwest embodied-intelligence industrial base rolled out 200 robots within half a year. On the agricultural side, Qionglai's citrus smart sorting line uses AI machine vision to detect surface blemishes and internal sugar content with over 95% accuracy, and 80 employees process 43.2 tons a day; Xinjin's fully automatic seedling nursery produces 72,000 seedlings an hour. Authoritative statistics on robot stock by industry have not yet been published (to be verified). On the supply side, Chengdu CRP sold 4,902 industrial robots in 2025, produced 5,900 and ran at an 84.3% capacity utilization rate; by 2025 revenue it is China's No. 1 welding robot manufacturer, selling to more than 40 countries and regions, with six-axis welding models accounting for 52.4% of its revenue; collaborative robot revenue grew nearly 4-fold year on year in 2025.
