Meishan was originally a small agricultural town; its industrial base was laid by Third Front construction. On July 29, 1965, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications' Meishan Communication Equipment Plant (code-named "Project 6505," commonly called Plant 505) broke ground at Xiang'erpo in Dongpo District, formed by merging and relocating the ministry's Shanghai Postal and Telecommunications Equipment Plant No. 1 and the carrier-equipment institute of the Beijing Postal and Telecommunications Research Institute. At completion in August 1967 it occupied more than 500 mu with over 4,000 employees, one of the country's largest communication-equipment specialist plants; 12 of its products won Sichuan Province major science-and-technology achievement awards in 1978, and it was restructured and dissolved in December 2008. Qingshen County hosted "three plants and one hospital": the Xinghua Instrument Plant (Plant 867), the Jianhua Instrument Plant (Plant 863, accepted and commissioned July 1, 1975), the Jianchuan Machine Plant (Plant 4501) and Hospital 408 of the Ministry of Electronics Industry. Jianchuan Machine Plant successfully developed a semi-hermetic Freon compressor in 1977 and introduced a complete Danish refrigerator-compressor production line in 1988, incubating what later became the listed company Danfu Co. In November 1966 the Ministry of Railways set up a preparatory office for the Meishan Rolling Stock Plant; the first batch of nearly 300 employees arrived from Qiqihar at Simeng Station, and in 1974 the first 51 newly built freight cars were delivered, filling the gap in southwest China's rolling-stock manufacturing — today's CRRC Meishan Rolling Stock Co., Ltd.

In 2025, Meishan's GDP reached 200.872 billion yuan, up 7.1%, of which secondary-industry value added was 79.620 billion yuan, up 8.3%. At year-end there were 1,043 above-scale industrial enterprises, and full-year above-scale industrial value added grew 13.7%; value added posted positive growth in 26 of 35 major industry categories, with chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing up 30.3%, computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing 15.7%, and agricultural and sideline food processing 10.8%. The "1+3" industries achieved output of 184.270 billion yuan, up 10.7%: new energy and new materials grew 12.1%, equipment manufacturing 14.0%, medicine and food 9.0%, and electronic information 4.9%; among key segments, lithium batteries grew 31.1% and photovoltaics 5.2%. Among major products, solar cells grew 41.1%, LCD display modules 20.6%, and monocrystalline silicon 10.1%. Tongwei Solar (Meishan)'s Phase 4 high-efficiency crystalline-silicon solar-cell project in the Ganmei Industrial Park has been in operation since March 2024, with 21 production lines running at full capacity and daily output of 4.8 million finished cells. The Pengshan District new green energy-storage materials cluster and the Renshou County new display industry cluster were selected as provincial characteristic industrial clusters for SMEs. Secondary-industry investment grew 7.7%.

Meishan treats smart upgrading and digital transformation as its main lever for building a manufacturing powerhouse: offline diagnostics have been completed for 550 enterprises, third-highest coverage in the province, and Renshou County was named a 2025 provincial model county for industrial technological transformation. The city has built three national-level smart-manufacturing pilot and demonstration enterprises and one national 5G factory; 23 enterprises have reached Level 2 or above in smart-manufacturing capability maturity, and there are ten advanced-level factories. It has cumulatively created 11 national and provincial green parks and 74 national and provincial green factories (third in the province). Three enterprises, including Boya New Materials, won national titles such as Future Manufacturing Leader and Typical Application Scenario, first in the province. The city has built the province's largest lithium-salt production base, southwest China's largest wet electronic chemicals base and the country's largest small- and medium-size new display production base, and it is home to the world's first Lighthouse Factory in PV cell manufacturing (Tongwei Solar Meishan base). In specific scenarios, Tongwei Solar (Meishan)'s cell lines are highly automated, with 21 lines running at full capacity; Sichuan Daoda Intelligent is layering AI and autonomous-driving technology onto its on-site vehicle base; and Qingshen's machinery industry holds national-leading shares in niche markets such as mechanical transmission parts and solid-wood woodworking machinery (2018 data). The 2026 targets are 200 enterprises completing digital transformation and 100 technological-transformation projects. No authoritative statistics on Meishan's industrial-robot holdings, annual new installations or robot density have been found through public channels (to be verified).
