Leshan was one of the key areas of Sichuan's Third Front construction. The state-owned Leshan Paper Mill (Plant 605) broke ground in November 1965, was completed in June 1971, began trial production in 1972 and entered formal production in 1978. Using domestic raw materials, it produced high-purity insulating pulp and paper for the power and electronics industries, filling a domestic gap and earning the name "China's insulating-pulp base." The Changzheng Pharmaceutical Factory was established in 1969 (construction began in 1968 as a branch of the North China Pharmaceutical Factory), started simplified production in 1971 and formed comprehensive production capacity in 1974; it was the largest antibiotic production base in southwest China, its gross industrial output exceeded 300 million yuan in 1997, and it went bankrupt in 2011. The Gongzui Hydropower Station was a supporting Third Front project and the first large hydropower station in southwest China. In July and October 1970, two Danish F.L. Smith wet-process kiln lines at the Emei Cement Plant were completed in succession, with annual capacity of 1 million tons; in July 1966 Leshan completed its first heavy-haul transport, delivering the plant's imported rotary kiln, about 50 meters long and weighing over 70 tons. In addition, Tangshan Railway College relocated to Emei in 1972 and was renamed Southwest Jiaotong University; in February 1981 China's first high-flux atomic reactor was completed in Leshan; and on September 21, 1984, China Circulator No. 1 was completed and commissioned at Institute 585 in Leshan.

In 2025, Leshan's GDP reached 250.154 billion yuan, up 3.1%. Industrial value added was 80.315 billion yuan, down 2.1%, accounting for 32.1% of GDP. There were 797 above-scale industrial enterprises, and above-scale industrial value added fell 9.1% (light industry up 8.8%, heavy industry down 11.7%), with a sales-to-output ratio of 93.5%. Among 34 major industry categories, computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing grew 38.1%; paper and paper products 26.5%; ferrous metal smelting and rolling 24.6%; non-metallic mining and beneficiation 23.2%; electricity and heat production and supply 17.7%; and electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing 14.2%. By industry, new energy storage output grew 70.0% and the low-altitude economy 28.3%, while crystalline-silicon PV fell 65.6%, green chemicals 15.1%, and equipment manufacturing 10.6%. Annual output included 113,600 tons of polysilicon (down 66.4%), 78,900 tons of monocrystalline silicon (down 48.7%), 10.456 million tons of phosphate ore (up 19.1%) and 3.5862 million tons of steel. Above-scale industrial enterprises recorded operating revenue of 141.53 billion yuan, down 10.7%, and total profit of 10.26 billion yuan, up 211.9%. The "241" modern industrial system is led by crystalline-silicon PV and green chemicals, with leaders such as Tongwei, GCL and JinkoSolar clustered around a full industry chain from silicon feedstock to wafering, cells and energy storage.

All of Leshan's above-scale industrial enterprises have moved to the cloud, with more than 20 digital factories (workshops) built and over 100 "smart upgrading and digital transformation" projects under construction or in preparation; more than ten projects — including Desheng's smart manufacturing, Fuhua Chemical's circular-industry cloud platform, YOFC's intelligent optical fiber and cable production line system, and Jinding's 5G smart mine — have been listed as national or provincial typical cases. Yongxiang Co. reached 100% informatization of its production process, and Yongxiang New Energy built the polysilicon industry's first digital factory. At the equipment level: Shangwei Co.'s smart-manufacturing workshop for nuclear-power cables introduced automatic cable-laying robots and machine-vision inspection, and realized one-click digital delivery via "Didi-style" forklifts; at Lefei Optoelectronics' fully 5G-connected digital factory, optical cable is produced at 2.5 meters per second with fewer than ten workers operating the whole line on handheld tablets, while in the open-air yard a giant gantry robot automatically locates and grabs cable drums weighing several tons, which unmanned transfer vehicles and unmanned forklifts then stack and load; Leshan Jialilai Textile invested 15 million yuan in retrofits — automatic doffing on ring-spinning frames, a single-spindle monitoring system for real-time tracking, and tube-inserting robots in service — lifting overall equipment efficiency by more than 15%. No authoritative statistics on Leshan's industrial-robot holdings or robot density have been found through public channels (to be verified).
