>Industrialization History
The Dahua Cotton Mill, relocated from Xi'an to Guangyuan in the 1930s, marks the origin of Guangyuan's modern industry. In autumn 1965, Gao Jun, vice minister of the Fourth Ministry of Machine Building Industry, was sent to northern Sichuan on the instruction of the Southwest Third Front Construction Committee to select sites for an anti-aircraft radar and command-instrument base; the electronic-industry cluster covering radar, command instruments and electronic components was ultimately laid out across Guangyuan–Wangcang–Qingchuan. From 1966, the state invested a cumulative 338.6 million yuan, building in succession the 081 Base, Wanzhong Machine Plant, Xinguang Optical Plant, Wuzhou (Fenglei) Equipment Plant, Xuguang Electron Tube Plant, Yongxing Radio Plant, Donghe Printing Co. and Jiangling Cable Plant, forming a fairly complete military electronic-equipment research and production base covering radar systems, command instruments, special-purpose electronic vehicles, electronic components, integrated circuits, wire and cable, and storage batteries. The 081 Base was renamed the 081 General Plant in 1983, with subordinate Plants 116, 105, 118, 112, 110, 102, 111 and 113, plus Depot 806, Hospital 410 and a technical school. On June 9, 1984, Jiang Zemin, minister of the Ministry of Electronics Industry, inspected the site and inscribed the name of the renamed Guangming Radio Plant. In 1985, Guangyuan County's gross industrial output was 180.3 million yuan, of which the 081 General Plant accounted for 72.982 million yuan, or 40%. After the 1980s, all plants other than 081 gradually relocated to Chongqing, Xindu, Mianyang and Chengdu.
Current Industrial Development
In 2025, Guangyuan's GDP reached 134.878 billion yuan, up 6.4% (sixth in the province). Above-scale industrial value added grew 13.8% (fourth in the province, with double-digit growth for 18 consecutive months), and the product sales rate was 96.6%. Value added grew in 24 of 35 major industry categories: non-metallic mineral products up 36.4%; electricity and heat production and supply 28.8%; and computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing 19.0%. Above-scale high-tech manufacturing value added grew 18.0%. Value added of the "1+3+3" leading industries grew 14.3%, contributing 98.9% of above-scale industrial growth — within it, silicon-based new materials grew 83.1%, machinery and electronics 16.6%, and energy and chemicals 14.2%. Aluminum-based new materials is the top-priority industry: leaders such as Zhongfu and Linfeng settled in from 2018, and a full industry chain of "green hydropower aluminum — deep aluminum processing — comprehensive aluminum resource utilization" has taken shape. In 2025 the cluster gathered more than 100 related enterprises, full-chain output exceeded 50 billion yuan — the city's first 50-billion-yuan-class industrial cluster — and cumulative aluminum ingot trading topped 37 billion yuan. Wanshun Zhongji Aluminum recorded output of 1.9 billion yuan in 2025, supplying double-zero aluminum foil and battery-foil blanks (about 0.22 mm thick) to CATL, BYD and others.
Industrial Robot & Automation Applications
Guangyuan's automation retrofits have rolled out in step with its three major sectors — aluminum-based new materials, green home furnishings, and food and beverage — but few specific robot projects have been publicly disclosed. In aluminum processing, foil passes through precision rolling mills at hundreds of meters per minute and must clear inspection before shipment; online measurement of thickness, strength, ductility and other indicators is standard on the lines. Sichuan Wanshun Zhongji posted output of 1.9 billion yuan in 2025, averaging roughly 3,500 yuan of processing value added per ton. Because electrolytic-aluminum enterprises such as Zhongfu and Linfeng only settled in 2018, most lines in the aluminum-based new-materials cluster were newly built in recent years and started from a relatively high automation level. The city now has 615,000 tons of electrolytic-aluminum capacity — 58% of Sichuan's total — 1.6 million tons of recycled-aluminum capacity and over 2.2 million tons of aluminum-processing capacity, first in the Sichuan–Chongqing region; the model of supplying molten aluminum directly to downstream users also keeps melting, casting and rolling highly continuous. In green home furnishings, the Sichuan Luli Green Digital-Intelligent Home Industrial Park (just 36 days from signing to groundbreaking) and companies such as Meihao Shijia built lines to "green digital-intelligent" standards, with a high share of CNC equipment in panel cutting, edge banding and sorting. Equipment and electronics rely on the legacy technical strength of the former 081 system for partial retrofits, while food, beverage and building-materials enterprises mainly replace standalone equipment for filling, palletizing and packaging. Overall, local industrial-robot applications concentrate on aluminum coil handling and palletizing, surface inspection of aluminum plate, strip and foil, furniture panel processing, and beverage filling and case packing. No authoritative statistics on Guangyuan's industrial-robot holdings, annual new installations or robot density have been found through public channels (to be verified).
