Guizhou Province

Modern industry in Guizhou began with the Third Front construction launched in 1964. That summer and autumn, the state defined Guizhou's Third Front buildout around the defense industry as its core, laying out three major military-industrial bases: Base 011 (aviation) in Anshun and Base 061 (aerospace) in Zunyi; in November 1964, the State Council's National Defense Industry Office decided to organize the 083 electronics base along the Duyun-Kaili-Huangping line. From 1964 to 1972, the state's First through Eighth Ministries of Machine-Building Industry relocated more than 100 military-industrial enterprises from northeast, north and east China into Guizhou. Base 011 built and produced in parallel and essentially completed the full aviation industry chain within five years; on September 18, 1970, a J-6 fighter made a successful test flight. By the end of 1978, the province's military-industrial system had completed cumulative capital construction investment of 2.4 billion yuan, building Base 011 with 46 subordinate units, Base 061 with 36 subordinate units, and Base 083 with 27 directly affiliated units. Energy, raw materials and machinery industries advanced in step: at the 1964 Third Front planning meeting of the Central Southwest Bureau, the state settled on "Panzhihua Steel in Sichuan, Shuicheng Steel in Guizhou", creating a "pendulum" flow of coal and iron ore along the Guiyang-Kunming and Chengdu-Kunming railways. Around 1966, the Ministry of Coal Industry drew 27 capital construction teams totaling more than 80,000 people from 25 mining bureaus across 15 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions to develop the Liupanshui coalfield, building the Liuzhi, Shuicheng and Panjiang mining bureaus and the Shuicheng Iron and Steel Works; Liupanshui was established as a city in December 1978. In the same period, the state expanded the Guiyang Iron and Steel Works, Guizhou Aluminum Plant and Zunyi Titanium Plant; built the Kaiyang phosphate mine and the Chishui natural gas chemical fertilizer plant; and completed the Changzheng Electric Base, made up of 11 specialized plants including the Changzheng Electric Works No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 (one of the country's five major low-voltage appliance production bases), the abrasives and grinding tools base of the Third, Sixth and Seventh Grinding Wheel Plants, and backbone enterprises such as Hongshan Bearing Plant, Huishui Xianfeng Machine Tool Plant and Duyun Dongfang Machine Tool Plant. On the food industry line, from November 1951 to 1953, the Renhuai County government successively integrated the Chengyi, Ronghe and Hengxing distilleries in Maotai town to form the state-owned Maotai Distillery. Before the Third Front construction, Guizhou had almost no machinery or chemical manufacturing capability; these projects formed the main framework of Guizhou's industry for the following decades.

In 2024, Guizhou's GDP was 2,266.712 billion yuan, up 5.3%, of which secondary industry value added was 709.758 billion yuan, up 6.7%; total industrial value added was 569.265 billion yuan, up 8.0%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 8.2%. Sixteen of the 19 key monitored industries posted growth in value added: chemical raw materials and chemical products manufacturing grew 32.8%, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling 37.6%, automobile manufacturing 66.2%, and food manufacturing 16.5%. Among major products: alcoholic beverages 990,500 kiloliters; chili products 294,800 tons, up 15.7%; integrated circuits 923.9158 million units, up 174.4%; automobiles 143,900 units, up 202.7%. Operating revenue of above-scale industrial enterprises was 1,076.156 billion yuan, up 5.3%, and total profits were 129.678 billion yuan, up 22.7%; industrial investment grew 11.3%. In 2025, province-wide above-scale industrial value added is expected to grow by about 7%, with the "six major industrial clusters" accounting for 82.2% of above-scale industry; the province's integration of industrialization and informatization reached a level of 62.1, and the CNC-ization rate of key processes rose to 65%. In industrial organization, Guizhou is advancing under the framework of the "six major industrial bases": sauce-aroma baijiu, energy and power, phosphate-coal-chemicals, big data and electronic information, advanced equipment manufacturing, and specialty foods and Chinese medicinal materials. Baijiu is centered on Zunyi's Renhuai; phosphorus chemicals are led by Guizhou Phosphate Group, whose sales revenue topped 60 billion yuan for the first time in 2024, with total profits of 3.416 billion yuan and fertilizer output exceeding 5 million tons. Equipment manufacturing is concentrated along the Guiyang-Anshun-Zunyi line in aviation, aerospace, construction machinery and automobiles, with representative enterprises including Guizhou Tire, Jonyang Heavy Industry, Hangyu Technology, Guizhou Space Appliance and China Zhenhua. In January 2025, Guizhou Tire was named a World Economic Forum "Lighthouse Factory", the first in China's tire industry and the first in Guizhou. On the policy side, in July 2024 the Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology and six other departments issued the "Guizhou Implementation Plan for Promoting Equipment Upgrading in Industry", setting a target of a 75% CNC-ization rate for key processes by 2027.

Applications are concentrated in five areas - baijiu, tires, phosphate-coal-chemicals, electronic components and aviation parts - while agriculture and agro-processing rely mainly on "automated lines plus machine-vision sorting". Baijiu is the densest application scenario: Renhuai Guotai Liquor uses robotic steamer loading and an intelligent liquor-collection system, producing 400 bottles of sauce-aroma baijiu per minute, saving 60% of land and cutting water use by 78%; Tangzhuang Liquor has deployed 72 steamer-loading robots that achieve millimeter-precision grain spreading through infrared temperature measurement and centralized data control; Jing Brand Maotai Town Liquor uses thermal imaging and ultrasonic detection to monitor fermented-mash temperature and bed height, with a spreading and cooling plate chain of more than 120 meters linking steamer loading and cooling. In tires, Guizhou Tire produces one tire every 25 seconds and was named a World Economic Forum "Lighthouse Factory" in 2025. In phosphate-coal-chemicals, Guizhou Phosphate Group put quadruped inspection robot dogs into service at the Wengfu chemical plant area, equipped with thermal imaging and combustible and toxic gas sensors; combined with a 5G + industrial internet platform, efficiency improved by about 30% and staff were reduced by 20% to 25%. In electronic components, Guizhou Space Appliance's twist-pin automation line cut staffing from 60 to 5 and raised monthly output from 2 million to 20 million pieces. In aviation parts, Hangyu Technology built China's first fully automated production line for aviation ring forgings, and Angda Aviation Forging built the country's first flexible intelligent ring forging line. On the agricultural side, intelligent tea sorting equipment (developed by the Guizhou Institute of Electromechanical Research and Design, integrating air separation, screening and color sorting) achieved a 98% pick-out rate in third-party testing; AI sorting machines at the Zunyi Xiazi chili industrial park have a capacity of 1 ton per hour per unit and remove more than 90% of impurities; at Liupanshui Meiweiyuan's 5G smart chili factory, frying temperature is locked at 175 degrees Celsius and single-line staffing was cut from 12 to 3. Xingren adlay has completed hulling, color sorting, grading and fully automated packaging lines. In 2024, province-wide output of Chinese medicinal materials was 1.4803 million tons; there is no authoritative statistic on the automation rate of primary processing at origin (to be verified). Guizhou has not published sector-level statistics on installed industrial robots; annual new installations and robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers, IFR basis) are to be verified. For reference, MIIT disclosed in 2025 a national manufacturing robot density of 470 units per 10,000 workers (not fully comparable with the IFR basis).
