Qianxinan's industry started with coal and hydropower. After the autonomous prefecture was established, Anlong, Xingren, Zhenfeng, Pu'an, Qinglong and other counties and cities successively built a batch of coal mines, and coal production capacity quickly reached 10 million tons. Soon after, cascade hydropower stations on the South and North Panjiang rivers — Lubuge, Tianshengqiao Grade II, Tianshengqiao Grade I and Guangzhao on the Beipan River — were completed and began generating power, and gold mining projects such as the Lannigou mine in Zhenfeng and the Getang mine in Anlong were put into operation, forming the prefecture's three major industrial sectors: coal, gold and electricity. In light industry, the Xingyi Distillery, the Prefectural Sugar Mill and the Zhenfeng Sugar Mill carried out technical upgrading and equipment renewal. Through a "doubling" technical upgrade, the Xingyi Chemical Fertilizer Plant expanded annual output of synthetic ammonia from 5,000 tons to 10,000 tons and of ammonium bicarbonate from 20,000 tons to 40,000 tons, and became the first enterprise in the prefecture to allow cadres to move both up and down and to hire contract workers. In the 1990s, locally distinctive leading enterprises such as the Xingyi Cigarette Factory and the Guizhouchun Distillery emerged; by 1995 the prefecture's gross industrial output value exceeded its gross agricultural output value for the first time. In 2003, Changhong Chemical of Yibin, Sichuan invested over 200 million yuan in Anlong to build a calcium carbide line with an annual capacity of 130,000 tons. In 2005, Hubei Yihua Group invested 750 million yuan to start, on the basis of the Xingyi General Chemical Plant, a technical upgrade project for 200,000 tons of synthetic ammonia and 300,000 tons of urea per year. In 2008, Tai'an Cement's 1.2-million-ton new dry-process rotary kiln line at Zhengtun Industrial Park in Xingyi was ignited and put into operation. Since the 13th Five-Year Plan, major projects such as Xingren Denggao Aluminum, Yilong Zhenhua New Materials, Anlong Eco-Energy Carrier and Yilong Pengsheng Paper have been completed and put into production.

In 2024, Qianxinan Prefecture's GDP reached 147.886 billion yuan, up 4.2%. Value added of the primary, secondary and tertiary industries was 28.985 billion yuan, 40.024 billion yuan and 78.877 billion yuan respectively; industry accounted for 22.1% of regional GDP, and above-scale industrial value added grew 10.0%. By the three major categories, mining fell 4.8%, manufacturing grew 15.9%, and electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply grew 7.6%. Among 14 key monitored industries, 5 posted positive value-added growth: ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing grew 50.4%, non-ferrous metal smelting and rolling processing grew 36.1%, and electricity and heat production and supply grew 7.7%; coal mining and washing fell 28.6%, non-metallic mineral products fell 20.3%, and computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing fell 21.2%. Main products: raw coal output was 10.4246 million tons, down 2.0%; electricity generation was 42.362 billion kWh, up 9.5%; gold grew 62.6%, primary aluminum (electrolytic aluminum) grew 16.8%, and refined tea grew 15.8%; refined sugar fell 48.1% and cement fell 11.5%. Above-scale industrial enterprises' operating revenue was 86.46 billion yuan, up 8.4%, while total profit was 100 million yuan, down 37.5%. By the end of 2024 the prefecture had 344 above-scale industrial enterprises in total; aluminum and aluminum processing and gold grew 34.1% and 111.3% respectively.

Automation in Qianxinan centers on mining, electrolytic aluminum and adlay processing, mainly process automation and dedicated sorting equipment; industrial robot applications are few. In mining, the smart dispatching center at the Baika coal mine in Xingren consolidates equipment status, mine gas concentrations and personnel location data onto a large screen for real-time monitoring; since 2025 the mine has invested over 5 million yuan to introduce electro-hydraulic control technology at the fully mechanized face in an extremely thin coal seam, cutting staff by half and raising production efficiency by nearly 50%. The prefecture has landed digital retrofit projects including the Anbao coal mine's 5G + smart mine, Xingren Denggao Aluminum's smart factory, and the Xingren Adlay Industry Group's 5G integrated management platform covering the full adlay industry chain; Guizhou Zijin completed a pressurized pre-oxidation project handling 4,000 tons per day, and Bisheng Mining and Wangcheng Mining completed fully enclosed ore-smelting furnace retrofits. In agricultural product processing, the Xingren National Modern Agriculture Industrial Park, with total investment of 247 million yuan, built an automated production line in the rice-whitening workshop of its processing center, supported by 5.86 million yuan of east-west cooperation funds; equipped with a zero-breakage bucket elevator and a five-layer screen grader, it separates whole, half, broken and triangular grains by category, and runs two fully automatic packaging lines. Since 2023, the Boluo–Xingren cooperation program has invested 20.86 million yuan, building 2 smart production lines and a constant-temperature adlay cold store with a capacity of over 7,000 tons. The prefecture has 111 adlay processing enterprises, an annual processing capacity of 450,000 tons and a combined annual output value of 3 billion yuan.
