Bijie was not a key deployment area of Guizhou's Third Front construction, and only a limited number of major defense-industrial and raw material projects were placed in Bijie during that period (the specific project list and years are to be verified). For a long stretch, Bijie's industry was dominated by coal mining, thermal power, cigarettes and baijiu processing, forming the four pillars of "coal, power, tobacco and liquor". Coal mining was the earliest form of Bijie's industry and the main source of county-level fiscal revenue for decades afterward; the Bijie Cigarette Factory and Jinsha Cellar Liquor represent the tobacco and baijiu processing lines respectively. The turning point came in the past decade. In 2015, citywide raw coal output was below 40 million tons, and leading industries such as energy and modern chemicals accounted for 59.2% of above-scale industry. In November 2015, Guizhou Guihang New Energy settled in the Bijie High-Tech Zone, starting the lithium battery industry from zero. Qianxi Chemical's 300,000-ton coal-to-ethylene-glycol project was completed, making it the largest coal-based ethylene glycol base in southwest China. The Zhijin Motianchong phosphate mine (resource reserves of 105 million tons) marked a breakthrough from nothing in phosphate mining and beneficiation; construction began in 2022, full production capacity was reached in 2025, and it now has 2.5 million tons of mining and beneficiation capacity per year. In August 2024, the Bijie phosphate-coal-chemical integration project, with a total investment of 73 billion yuan, was officially launched in Zhijin. It is the largest phosphate-coal-chemical project in Guizhou's history, planned to produce 800,000 tons of lithium iron phosphate, 1.5 million tons of iron phosphate and 500,000 tons of methanol per year.

In 2024, Bijie's GDP was 245.759 billion yuan, up 4.3%; total industrial value added was 54.86 billion yuan, up 5.1%, and above-scale industrial value added grew 4.6%. By category, mining grew 9.1%, manufacturing grew 2.8%, and electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply declined 0.9%. By industry, coal mining and washing grew 6.6% and tobacco products grew 1.9%. Among major products, raw coal output grew 12.3%, power generation fell 3.6%, and baijiu fell 36.3%. In 2025, citywide industrial value added was 55.39 billion yuan, up 4.6%; industrial investment grew 12.1%, manufacturing investment grew 85.8%, and the share of leading industries in above-scale industry rose to 70.97%. New-energy installed capacity reached 8.02 million kW, first in the province and 38.89% of total power capacity. Guihang New Energy produced 72 million lithium batteries in 2024, with an output value of 270 million yuan. The light textile industry's output value was 1.279 billion yuan in 2024; the Bijie High-Tech Zone has gathered more than 50 textile and garment enterprises, and Hongsheng Textile has put 1,104 looms into operation. Once the phosphate-coal-chemical integration project goes into production, it is expected to generate an annual output value of more than 120 billion yuan and create over 14,000 jobs.

On the industrial side, automation focuses on smart coal mines, intelligent phosphate mining and beneficiation, and lithium battery lines. For coal, since Qianxi Xintian Coal Mine became Guizhou's first national-level smart coal mine demonstration project to pass acceptance, the city has built 59 intelligent mining faces and 17 smart coal mines. Baili Dujuan's Honglin Coal Mine was upgraded from a small mine producing 90,000 tons a year into a modern mine with an annual output of 1.8 million tons; the entire process from underground extraction to coal washing can be controlled at one click from the central control room. For phosphate, the dispatch and command center of the Zhijin Motianchong phosphate mine remotely operates underground work through a 3D visualization system; ball mills in the grinding and flotation workshop handle 150 tons per hour, and beneficiation recovery has risen to about 90%. For lithium batteries, Guihang New Energy's smart workshop produced 72 million lithium batteries in 2024 with an output value of 270 million yuan; Juneng Technology, through equipment upgrades, compressed line staffing from about 200 workers producing 80,000 to 100,000 units a day to 60 workers producing 250,000 units a day. On the agricultural side, gastrodia processing has the highest level of automation: Dafang Jiulong Gastrodia has built four GMP production lines for capsules, beverages, tablets and medicinal liquor, with the gastrodia wine line filling 3,500 bottles an hour. The Liangshan Gastrodia Refining and Processing Center in the Bijie High-Tech Zone is equipped with an automated washing line, slicers and freeze dryers; after more than 20 hours of freeze drying, moisture content is held below 2%, extending shelf life from 3 days for fresh gastrodia to 3 years. In 2024, citywide output of Chinese herbal medicinal materials grew 26.7% and tea output grew 9.9%. No public statistics exist on the city's installed industrial robot base or annual new installations (to be verified).
