In 1949 Dazhou had only some 20-plus small private plants and a total gross industrial output value of 71.74 million yuan, with the output ratio of agriculture, light industry and heavy industry at 92:7:1. During the Third Front construction period, the headquarters of Bases 062 and 064 of the Ministry of Astronautical Industry and their affiliated plants, research institutes, departments, stations, hospitals and schools were stationed in Dazhou, covering metallurgy, machinery, communications, chemicals and energy as well as ordnance, aviation and aerospace — including the Changzheng Machinery Plant (7102), Liaoyuan Radio Plant (7105), Qianfeng Machinery Plant (7111), Tongjiang Machinery Plant (7303), Mingjiang Machinery Plant (7304) and Research Institute 7306 — laying the foundation of modern industry. There were also the Daxian Hongqi Iron and Steel Plant (today's Dagang), the Wanfu Iron and Steel Plant, Military Warehouse 515 and Cotton and Hemp Warehouse 6709. On December 1, 1959, the Daxian Iron and Steel Plant's 1,500-kW generator unit went into operation; in February 1985 a commercially valuable natural gas well was drilled at Leiyinpu in Nanwai town; in February 1993 the Daxian General Chemical Plant's ammonium phosphate project went into production; and in 1997 the Huachuan Automobile Plant completed its technical upgrade project for 30,000 light-duty dump trucks a year. In 2002 China's third-largest natural gas field was discovered within the city's borders, with resources of 3.8 trillion cubic meters in Xuanhan and surrounding areas. At the turn of this century, Bases 062 and 064 and their affiliated plants moved to Longquanyi, Chengdu; apart from the First Business Division of the Changzheng Machinery Plant and Dagang, ownership was transferred to local authorities, and 13 Third Front industrial heritage sites remain today.

In 2025, Dazhou's above-scale industrial value added grew 7.3% year on year, ranking second among the province's regional central cities; above-scale industrial enterprises reached 1,081, a net increase of 274 over 2020; total industrial value added rose from 47.99 billion yuan in 2020 to 62.0 billion yuan in 2025; industrial investment grew 8.2%. The city built a pipeline of 335 industrial technical-upgrade projects for the year with a total investment of 105.070 billion yuan, and 10 ten-billion-yuan-level projects are advancing faster. The "3+3+N" modern industrial clusters: energy chemicals, new materials and agricultural product processing at the hundred-billion-yuan level, and intelligent equipment manufacturing, electronic information, and light textiles and apparel at the fifty-billion-yuan level. Proven natural gas reserves are 720 billion cubic meters, with prospective reserves of 3.8 trillion cubic meters; the city hosts the country's first marine-facies lithium-potassium resource deposit, with 710 million tons of potash reserves. The natural gas industry has preliminarily formed five major product chains; light textiles and apparel have built a complete industry chain from fiber making to garments; and basalt fiber and glass fiber have achieved full-chain layouts. The intelligent equipment industry has 92 above-scale enterprises. On parks, the high-tech zone was approved as one of Sichuan's first low-altitude application pilots; the Puguang Economic Development Zone was elevated to a national-level green chemical industrial park; Dazhou became one of four cities (prefectures) in the province with three major chemical industrial parks; and parks account for over 80% of the city's above-scale industrial output value.

Dazhou is pushing full coverage of smart-upgrading-and-digital-transformation diagnostics for above-scale industrial enterprises, having completed diagnostic assessments for a cumulative 1,104 enterprises; it has created 1 national excellence-level factory and 2 national-level 5G factories, and newly recognized 6 provincial-level and 15 municipal-level enterprise technology centers. Xuanhan Hangda Iron and Steel, Conch Cement and other enterprises have successfully built national-level smart manufacturing demonstration factories, serving as the main local models for process-industry automation; natural gas and sulfur chemical plants widely adopt DCS centralized control and safety instrumented systems. On the emerging-industry side, Tengdun's ton-class UAV completed the country's first round-trip night cargo flight between Chengdu and Dazhou; Xingkong Sodium Battery's sodium-ion battery line went into production; and SVOLT Energy's lithium-battery zero-carbon industrial park has formed a complete industrial ecosystem. The Wanda-Kai advanced computing center is in operation; starting from "zero", the city has built a digital economy industrial park, a city brain and an AI industry research institute, providing computing power for manufacturing's smart upgrading and digital transformation. Although light textiles and apparel have formed a complete chain from fiber making to garments, the automation rate in sewing remains low; retrofit potential lies mainly in cutting, printing and back-end packaging.
