Bazhong's industry started from a low base. In the early years of the PRC, the city's industrial mainstay was handicraft workshops formed under the natural economy; in 1950 there were only 63 private industrial plants (workshops) with a gross industrial output value of just over 9.8 million yuan, covering only mining, coal mining, small and medium farm-tool making, weaving, brewing, oil pressing, bricks and tiles, and daily-use ceramics. It then took off amid the great steel-making campaign and the development of the "five small" industries, successively establishing canneries, silk-reeling plants, cotton mills, agricultural machinery plants, distilleries, pharmaceutical plants, printing plants, tanneries and silk factories as local state-owned and collective enterprises. When the prefecture was reorganized as a city in 1993, it had some 20-plus enterprises including rice and flour mills, silk mills, textile mills, shoe factories and gear factories, with annual output value below 1 billion yuan, total gross industrial output value of 1.174 billion yuan and only 13 industrial categories. Unlike most industrial cities in Sichuan, Bazhong was not a key layout area of the national Third Front construction and did not form a systematic military-electronics or machinery industry; local industry long centered on "five small" industries such as small hydropower, small chemical fertilizer and small cement, plus agricultural product processing (this assessment is based on available public materials; no records of large-scale Third Front military projects within Bazhong were found). By 2023 the city's industrial categories had grown to 33 major categories, with more than 1,800 industrial enterprises.

In 2025, Bazhong's GDP reached 91.664 billion yuan, up 6.0%; industrial value added was 9.469 billion yuan, up 10.8%; there were 441 above-scale industrial enterprises, and above-scale industrial value added grew 14.4%, maintaining double-digit growth for 21 consecutive months. Among 33 major industry categories, 23 posted value-added growth: electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing grew 1.6-fold, computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing 72.6%, metal products 28.3%, and agricultural and sideline food processing 15.0%; above-scale industrial value added of the five leading industries grew 15.5%. Among product outputs, lamps and lighting fixtures grew 10.6-fold, fresh and chilled meat 39.2%, raw iron ore 22.3%, feed 21.7%, insulated glass 16.3% and electronic components 10.8%. Above-scale industrial enterprises' operating revenue was 18.38 billion yuan, up 11.0%. Industrial investment and manufacturing investment grew 57.5% and 51.1% respectively, both ranking 1st in the province. Oil and gas are the biggest variable: Bazhong holds 1.4 trillion cubic meters of natural gas geological resources and 2.5 billion tons of shale oil resources, and is the only prefecture-level city in the Sichuan Basin with large-scale petroleum resource reserves; in 2025, oil and natural gas output grew 362.7% and 24.4% respectively, and the Zengkou–Jintang chemical industrial park was approved. On sodium-ion batteries, Baisige's 5,000-ton hard-carbon anode material line went into production, and the Bazhong ETDZ established its new "one zone, five parks" mechanism.

Bazhong's industrial aggregate is small (above-scale industrial operating revenue of 18.38 billion yuan in 2025), and automation overall remains at the stage of point-by-point retrofits. In 2025, 60% of above-scale industrial enterprises achieved smart upgrading and digital transformation, and Inovanceg Zhilian's 100,000-square-meter smart factory was completed and put into use. Landed automation demand is concentrated in three scenarios: first, food and beverage and agricultural product processing (3.299 million hogs marketed, Tongjiang white fungus, Nanjiang yellow goats, etc.), where replacement by automated equipment is most evident in cutting, filling, sterilization and boxing; second, electronic components and display supporting industries (Tongyou Microelectronics' PIM inductors and Hantian Industrial's touch modules have entered the supply chains of BOE and BYD), with rising demand for precision assembly, dispensing and inspection equipment; third, newly built oil-and-gas and sodium-battery capacity, where the plants themselves are designed to higher automation standards, such as Baisige's sodium-battery hard-carbon anode material line. Because the city lacks complete-robot manufacturers and system integrators (16 newly recognized provincial-level specialized and innovative SMEs in 2025), most retrofits are undertaken by outside suppliers and focus on standalone equipment and partial line upgrades. No authoritative statistics on Bazhong's industrial robot stock, annual new installations or robot density were found through public channels (to be verified).
