For decades Dehong was a border agricultural prefecture dominated by sugar making, grain and oil processing, building materials, and small hydropower, with few industrial categories and small enterprises. Its modern industry took shape along two paths: first, the gradual expansion of resource-based industries such as cane sugar, hydropower, industrial silicon, cement, and pharmaceuticals; second, in recent years, the absorption of industries transferred from eastern China. Textiles and apparel are the clearest window onto this shift. The prefecture's textile and apparel enterprises grew from 17 in 2020 to 168, above-scale industrial output climbed from 303 million yuan to 4.251 billion yuan, and textiles and apparel now account for 26.55% of the prefecture's above-scale industry. Virtually all of this growth in enterprise numbers and output came from post-2020 industrial transfer. In the traditional industries, electricity generation reached 15.11 billion kWh in 2024, up 12.2%; grid-connected photovoltaic capacity stood at 646,000 kW; and water, electricity, and gas industries contributed 51.9% of industrial value added. Power has always been Dehong's largest industrial sector. Since 2023 the Ruili Border Industrial Park has been the priority of the province's border industrial park program. "Parks within the park" have been completed, including the Youngor Fashion Industrial Park, the Kaixiya Silk Industrial Park, the China-Myanmar Modern Agricultural Commerce Industrial Park, and the Zhongshuo Chinese Medicinal Materials Industrial Park. Within one year, 110 newly signed enterprises settled in and 92 began production, including 21 landmark, leading enterprises; standard factory floor space and ancillary buildings grew 61.7% and employment grew 338%; in 2024 the park's above-scale industrial value added grew 43.8%. Four leading industry chains have taken shape in the prefecture: textiles and apparel, communications electronics, equipment manufacturing, and onshore processing of imported goods.

In 2024, Dehong Prefecture's GDP was 62.012 billion yuan, up 3.0%. Value added of the primary, secondary, and tertiary industries was 13.181 billion yuan, 11.707 billion yuan, and 37.124 billion yuan respectively. Above-scale industrial value added grew 11.5%, 8.2 percentage points above the provincial average and ranked 2nd in the province. By sector, the textile, apparel, and garment industry grew 2.9-fold year on year on the strength of newly added enterprises, pulling above-scale industrial value-added growth up by 5.9 percentage points. Equipment manufacturing grew 87.2%, within which electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing grew 1.0-fold and computer, communications, and other electronic equipment manufacturing grew 62.0%. Electricity and heat production and supply grew 7.5%, accounted for 51.9% of the prefecture's above-scale industrial value added, and contributed 3.6 percentage points of growth. Main products: 48.14 million garments, up 8.8-fold; 431,100 tons of finished sugar, up 8.1%; 7,600 tons of refined tea, up 9.5%; 10.714 billion kWh of electricity, up 9.8%; 271,600 tons of silicon, down 6.1%; 1.9472 million tons of cement, down 11.1%. Industrial investment grew 14.4% and accounted for 46.1% of all investment; energy industry investment grew 58.3%; energy industry value added made up 53% of industrial value added; and the prefecture's grid-connected new-energy capacity exceeded 630,000 kW. Angel Yeast's 15,000-ton yeast extract project in Longchuan was completed and commissioned, and the reorganization of Hougu Coffee achieved phased results.

Dehong's automation retrofits are concentrated in textile, apparel, and communications electronics enterprises in the Ruili Border Industrial Park, representing equipment investment in newly added capacity in recent years. Automation levels in the existing traditional industries (sugar, silicon smelting, cement, building materials) remain low. Specific progress: in April 2025 the Aoke Garment workshop in the Ruili Border Industrial Park commissioned a smart overhead-hanger system that automates the full sorting, transfer, and quality-inspection workflow through digital dispatching, recording process-level data precisely to improve quality and efficiency while holding down costs. Shangbao Electronics, Yinhuang Electronics, Yunnan Dai Medicine, Aoke Garment, and other enterprises have retrofitted and upgraded automated production equipment. At the park level, 110 enterprises invested 661 million yuan in building and upgrading automated, smart production lines; R&D spending by above-scale enterprises grew 28-fold; 20 high-tech, specialized-and-innovative, and similar enterprises were cultivated or attracted; and a cumulative 71 patents of various types were obtained. The prefecture's policy direction is to support enterprises in building smart workshops and flexible production lines and to promote digital printing, smart cutting, and automated sewing equipment. Traditional industries such as sugar, hydropower, silicon, and building materials are required by the "15th Five-Year Plan" recommendations to accelerate equipment renewal and technological transformation and to develop smart and green manufacturing. These retrofits center on automated sewing units, smart overhead-hanger systems, and dedicated equipment. There is no public data on installed units of six-axis robots, SCARA robots, parallel robots, or AGVs (to be verified); nor are there public statistics on the prefecture's industrial robot base, annual new installations, or robot density (to be verified).
