The foundation of Banan's above-scale industry comes from the Third Front construction "merger of nine factories." In the 1960s, under the policy of "close to the mountains, dispersed, and concealed," the Chongqing region laid out a production system for ground-suppression artillery and large-caliber anti-aircraft guns along the southern line. Nine artillery-specialized plants — Shuangxi Machinery Works, Sichuan Qingyan Machinery Works, Sichuan Hongquan Instrument Works, Chongqing Yuzhou Gear Works, Chongqing Qingjiang Machine Works, Chongqing Pingshan Machinery Works, Sichuan Hongshan Foundry, Chongqing Cast Steel Works, and Chongqing Qingjiang Machinery Works — were scattered through the valleys of Jiangjin, Qijiang, Wansheng, and Nanchuan. Relocation began in 1988 under the national Third Front adjustment policy. Chongqing Dajiang Industry (Group) Co., Ltd. was established in March 1992 and passed national-level completion acceptance organized by the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and China South Industries Group Corporation in December 2003. The relocation spanned 15 years and four five-year plans, with cumulative capital construction investment of 1.192 billion yuan, 684,700 square meters of floor space built, and 19,000 employees relocated — a total of nearly 1.2 billion yuan, the longest and largest Third Front merger-relocation in the country. The enterprise brought 40,000 employees and their families to Yudong, turning Banan from a zone of agricultural county towns into an auto city in western Chongqing. It later spawned backbone enterprises such as Jianshe Industry Group (whose predecessor was the Hanyang Arsenal), and after 2004 an industrial structure centered on automobiles and motorcycles, equipment, and displays gradually took shape.

In 2024, Banan District's GDP reached 118.875 billion yuan, up 4.9%. Above-scale industrial value added grew 6.4%, and above-scale industrial output far exceeded 100 billion yuan, up 6.3% — making Banan a 100-billion-yuan industrial district ranked fourth among the central urban districts, with industry contributing 41.2% of GDP. The district has built a "1246" advanced manufacturing cluster system: one leading industry (biomedicine); two pillar industries (new-type displays; automobiles and motorcycles); four distinctive advantage industries (intelligent equipment and smart manufacturing; light industry and textiles; smart home; food and agricultural product processing); and six strategic "rising star" industries (software and information services; optoelectronics; aerospace; medical devices; agricultural machinery and equipment; hydrogen energy). Among major products, output reached 166,000 automobiles (up 20.5%), 1.0367 million motorcycles (up 13.9%), and 10.7935 million display units (up 5.3%). Strategic emerging industry output approached 50 billion yuan, up 8.8%, accounting for 43.3% of above-scale industrial output. Technical upgrading investment reached nearly 8 billion yuan, up 35.2%, or 48.5% of industrial investment — fourth in the municipality. In August 2024, the seralunmab injection developed by Zhixiang Jintai, a resident enterprise of Chongqing International Bio-City, won market approval — a "zero-to-one" breakthrough for Class 1 innovative drugs in Chongqing. HKC, as the leader, has drawn more than 20 enterprises onto the new-type display chain; Zongshen Motorcycle sold 1.27 million units, ranking fourth nationwide.

Banan has published neither its industrial robot stock nor its robot density; both figures are to be verified. The picture can be read from two angles: enterprise cases and municipal-level certifications. After the smart retrofit of Macio Home Furnishing's cabinet workshop, intelligent robots carry out processing on the line: raw material utilization rose by nearly 20%, labor cost as a share of output value fell by nearly 50%, product line-off time was cut from 16 hours to 4, and the plant saves about 2.24 million yuan in labor costs and about 810,000 yuan in panel costs a year. On Zongshen Power's 1011 smart manufacturing assembly line, dozens of robots stand in position; through identifier-resolution and OTO/IT convergence technologies, the press calls up the exact machining program for each product model. Compared with the old line, the automation rate is 15 times higher, automatic error-proofing and correction capability improved 10.6-fold, operational automation rose tenfold, and in-process assembly data collection reached 100%. In 2024 the district added 3 smart factories and 4 digital workshops, bringing the cumulative totals to 14 smart factories and 52 digital workshops — third and seventh in the municipality, respectively. Meilixin Technology's "smart factory for 5G communication and NEV precision die-cast structural parts," Chongqing Lingyao's "smart factory for complete-vehicle manufacturing," and Zongshen Aero Engine's "smart factory for low- and medium-altitude UAV aviation power manufacturing" were named 2024 municipal-level smart factories; Zongshen's engine manufacturing entered the national-level outstanding smart factory list.
