Wanzhou's modern industry took off after it opened as a treaty port in 1902. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Tuokou Arsenal and the Hanyang Arsenal, among others, relocated inland here - one origin of the "Chengdu-Chongqing-Wanzhou" formulation. After the founding of New China, the Wanzhou area successively built the "Eight Major Plants": Yongping Machine Works, Wujiang Machine Works, Jiangyun Machine Works, Qingping Machine Works, Hengshan Machine Works, Jiangling Instrument Plant, Changping Machine Works, and Changjiang Machine Works, gradually shifting from a commercial consumer city to an industrial production city. During the Third Front construction period, most of these enterprises undertook shipbuilding and ordnance support tasks - for example, the state-run Yongping Machine Works (Plant 452), built in 1963 by the Wuhu Shipyard under the Sixth Ministry of Machine Building Industry, took root in the dense forests of Tiefeng Mountain producing navigation instruments for naval vessels until it was disbanded in 1993. Light industry prospered in the 1980s, with Wanguang batteries, Dongfang Pharmaceutical, and Feima MSG (then southwest China's largest microbial fermentation enterprise) becoming nationally known brands. The Three Gorges Project was the turning point: under the construction restriction barring expansion or retrofit of factories below the 175-meter water line, combined with the "original scale, original standard, original function" relocation compensation principle and nationwide SOE reform, more than two-thirds of the area's 370-plus industrial and mining enterprises were closed or bankrupted and over 60,000 workers were laid off, with only a few enterprises such as Jiangdong Machinery retained. Industry began to recover only after Chongqing approved the establishment of the Wanzhou Industrial Park in 2002.

In 2024, Wanzhou District's GDP reached 122.236 billion yuan, up 6.8%; industrial value added was 25.734 billion yuan, up 9.0%, with its share of GDP rising 4.2 percentage points year on year. Above-scale industry delivered 71.917 billion yuan in output, up 13.0% - the fourth-fastest in the municipality; above-scale industrial value added grew 11.5%, ranking third citywide and first in northeast Chongqing, and has grown above 10% for 44 consecutive months. The Wanzhou ETDZ contributed 62.521 billion yuan, up 13.4%. The three leading industries delivered 53.653 billion yuan, up 14.8%: advanced materials 36.236 billion yuan, intelligent equipment and intelligent manufacturing 13.494 billion yuan, and new-type energy 11.145 billion yuan; the two specialty industries delivered 15.773 billion yuan, up 6.9%. Leading enterprises Jinlong Copper Tube Group and Jiulong Wanbo each exceeded 16 billion yuan in output; Jiulong Wanbo is the world's largest single-site alumina producer. Key products: alumina 4.5796 million tons, copper products 188,800 tons, raw salt 1.3 million tons, soda ash 905,800 tons, automobiles 155,100 units, lithium-ion batteries 91.0767 million units (up 42.9%), and cotton yarn 26,000 tons. Industrial investment for the year totaled 8.63 billion yuan, up 15.1%, including 3.17 billion yuan in technical retrofit investment, up 56%; industrial tax revenue on record reached 2.53 billion yuan, up 17.7%.

Wanzhou has not published its industrial robot installed base or robot density; both are to be verified. Verifiable scenes concentrate in automobiles and shipbuilding support. Chongqing Changan Kuayue Vehicle Co., Ltd. has invested 150 million yuan successively to build five intelligent lines covering welding, painting, and more. The welding workshop arranges multiple welding lines in a main-line-with-wings layout on both sides, using automatic roller-bed large-circulation conveying, with welding and painting robots deployed along every line. After the retrofit, one light bus line cut its on-duty workforce of about 150 by roughly 30% and raised hourly body output from 10 to 17 units, lifting overall production efficiency by more than 30% and cutting manufacturing costs by 25%; the company plans to invest another 200 million yuan over the next three to five years. CSSC Changjiang Technology put six intelligent flexible lines into service, using industrial robots to machine cylinders - key components of painting equipment - in unattended operation; a single finished piece takes under 40 minutes, monthly output rose from 150 to more than 300 pieces, inner-wall surface finish improved from Ra0.4 to Ra0.2, overall production efficiency rose 1.8-fold, the product defect rate fell 95%, and operating costs dropped nearly 20%. The district has implemented 185 smart retrofit projects cumulatively and built 4 municipal-level smart factories and 18 digital workshops; Jinlong Copper Tube's precision copper tube intelligent manufacturing demonstration factory was selected through the open-call mechanism as a national-level smart manufacturing demonstration factory.
