Kaizhou's industry grew out of coal and electricity. Coal mining in Changping Village, Heqian Town, dates back to the late Ming dynasty, was scaled up during the Xianfeng reign of the Qing, and in 1861 villager Chen Nengyuan opened a coal works. By the Republican era there were more than 80 coal pits; anthracite from the largest, the "Tianbao cage mine", was shipped out via the water wharf at Tulongdong on the Dongli River. On November 16, 1951, Kaixian established its first local state-run coal works, "No. 1 Coal Works"; in 1964, under Third Front construction, it was placed under the direct administration of Wanxian Prefecture and named "Sichuan State-Run Kaixian Coal Mine", covering more than 1,000 mu with a coal-bearing area of 12 square kilometers and reserves of 17 million tons, all with calorific values above 6,000 kcal. In 1979 it completed a staff club seating more than a thousand — the most envied workplace in Wanxian Prefecture at the time. In power, the Baihe Power Plant (formerly the Kaixian Power Plant), with two 50,000-kW units, was completed and put into operation in Baihe Town in December 1992; its Phase II of two 300,000-kW units broke ground in 2001 and was fully operational by the end of 2005; in 2008, two energy-intensive 50,000-kW units were shut down and the remaining units retrofitted with desulfurization and denitrification. The Nanya natural gas well began trial production in 1992; the old county seat started using gas in 1994; and the Xinghe desulfurization station was completed in 1999. Together these formed an industrial system built on four mainstays: energy, food industry, building materials, and light textiles and garments.

In 2024, Kaizhou District's GDP reached 72.144 billion yuan, up 3.0%, with a three-industry structure of 13.4:34.9:51.7. Industrial value added was 13.507 billion yuan, up 3.7%; above-scale industrial value added grew 2.4%; by category, mining grew 6.3%, manufacturing 3.7%, and electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply fell 1.0%. Above-scale industrial profits grew 3.6% while total taxes fell 5.3%. The district has preliminarily formed an industrial system built on four mainstays — energy, food industry, building materials, and light textiles and garments — while emerging industries such as electronic information, biomedicine and equipment manufacturing have grown rapidly in recent years; in 2024 the shares of strategic emerging industries and high-tech industries rose to 13.5% and 17.8% respectively. That year, Kaizhou High-Tech Zone was approved as a Chongqing municipal green industrial park; 31 industrial projects, including Weishi communications equipment production, landed and started operations; and industrial investment reached 8.91 billion yuan. High-tech enterprises rose to 105 and technology-based enterprises to 746; core digital economy value added grew 18.9%; and the district achieved a "zero breakthrough" in municipal-level smart factories. The brand value of "Kaixian spring orange" exceeded 11 billion yuan, and the combined output value of the five industrial clusters — medicine, vegetables, fruit, hogs and grain — reached 23.8 billion yuan. Chongqing Haitong Environmental Technology invests 7% of its annual revenue in R&D and holds 13 authorized invention patents.

Kaizhou has not published its industrial robot stock or robot density; both figures are to be verified. Verifiable progress: in 2024 the district added 4 municipal-level digital workshops, bringing cumulative totals to 3 municipal-level smart factories and 18 municipal-level digital workshops, and achieved its "zero breakthrough" in municipal-level smart factories — Chongqing Dekai Industrial Co., Ltd.'s "high-speed copper-clad laminate production smart factory" was selected for the 2024 Chongqing municipal smart factory list. At the enterprise level, Chongqing Xinhuahui Industrial is a green intelligent textile company whose workshops run intelligent high-speed warping machines and high-speed intelligent air-jet looms; after digital retrofitting, production time per million meters of cloth fell from 22 days to 19, efficiency rose 15%, and the plant achieved flexible production that adjusts product plans to market demand. Chongqing Haitong Environmental Technology broke through a "chokehold" technology with its reverse-osmosis membrane products and brought them into mass production. Chongqing Guochengtang Pharmaceutical continues to invest in equipment upgrades across extraction, testing, portioning and packaging. Because the leading industries are energy, food, building materials and light textiles, installations of six-axis robots and SCARA robots are concentrated in electronic information (copper-clad laminates, PCBs) and auto/motorcycle components — mainly welding, handling and inspection processes — and the overall scale is smaller than in the main urban area and western Chongqing districts; collaborative robot applications remain rare.
