Liangping was historically known as Liangshan — "the broad plain beneath Mount Gaoliang" — and has been famed through the ages as the "granary of Ba-Shu"; the Southern Song poet Lu You wrote that "the people of Duliang alone know no hardship". Modern industry started late: before the 1990s the county was essentially a landscape of small plants doing grain-and-oil processing, farm machinery repair and bamboo/wood processing. The turning point was the park economy. On December 30, 2002, the municipal government approved the establishment of the Chongqing Shuanggui Industrial Park; in January 2006 it was renamed the Chongqing Liangping Industrial Park after review by the National Development and Reform Commission; and on February 1, 2021, the municipal government approved the Chongqing Liangping High-Tech Industrial Development Zone — the first municipal-level high-tech zone among the "two groups" of districts and counties. Taking on coastal industrial transfer was the main thread of this stage: Qishuang Foods settled in 2009, followed by nearly 20 Fujian enterprises including Rongkang Packaging and Zetong Pipe, forming a Fujian merchants' industrial park; in integrated circuits, the pillar firms are Pingwei Industrial, Jieershi Display and Tiansheng Electronics — Tiansheng has been rooted in Liangping for 15 years, growing from a micro enterprise into a national high-tech company that exports 80% of its products to Europe and the Americas. In 2020, Liangping Airport obtained an A1-class general aviation airport operating license, leaving room for low-altitude equipment manufacturing. By the end of 2024, the high-tech zone hosted 244 industrial enterprises, 81 of them above-scale. In 2025, the unmanned aerial vehicle manufacturing industrial park (Phase I), with a total investment of 5 billion yuan, entered main construction, planned to produce more than a thousand special-purpose aircraft a year.

In 2024, Liangping's industrial value added grew 4.2%, accounting for 19.6% of the district's GDP, with industry contributing 14.2% to GDP growth; gross above-scale industrial output grew 6.4%, with the high-tech zone accounting for 77.9% of the district total. In terms of structure, high-tech manufacturing output grew 33.1% and made up 18.5% of above-scale industry. By sector, integrated circuit output grew 39.5%, energy 11.6%, equipment manufacturing 8.0% and smart home products 17.9%, while food and agricultural product processing fell 14.7% and new materials 5.3%. The high-tech zone's above-scale gross industrial output was 6.4 billion yuan in 2024, up 8.1%, and 7.09 billion yuan in 2025, up 10.1%, with its three leading industries (low-altitude economy, food and agricultural product processing, and integrated circuits) contributing 4.75 billion yuan. Food and agricultural product processing has cumulatively cultivated 324 upstream and downstream enterprises, 35 of them above-scale, with annual output value exceeding 3 billion yuan, and has built a municipal-level 10-billion-yuan-class demonstration park for agricultural product processing. On the farm side, Liangping maintains bases of 1 million mu of grain and oil crops, 1 million hogs, 1 million mu of fruit and vegetables, 50,000 mu of aquaculture and 250,000 mu of condiment crops — the raw-material base for processing. In the low-altitude economy, a 1-billion-yuan industry fund has been established, attracting more than 40 industry-chain players including Chengdu JOUAV and Shandong Longyi; the district has roughly 6,000 square kilometers of near- and far-range airspace and more than 300 flyable days a year.

Liangping's automation investment is concentrated in three scenarios: integrated circuits, automotive electronics and food packaging. In integrated circuits, Pingwei Industrial has built the city's first power semiconductor smart factory, applying 5G + industrial internet for full-process automation: the production cycle is cut to 48 hours, labor costs are down 70%, and the yield of automotive-grade devices has risen to 98% — it also created China's first independently controllable discrete smart manufacturing workshop for semiconductors. Yuanhong Optoelectronics produces 20 million glass cover plates a year and, after deploying an AI quality inspection system, achieves 99.9% defect-recognition accuracy. Maoyue Optoelectronics used an MES system to shorten order delivery cycles by 30% and lift inventory turnover by 50%. In automotive electronics, Leren Automotive Electronics invested in 15 fully automatic terminal machines and 6 circular assembly lines, completing construction of capacity for 200,000 sets of vehicle wiring harnesses a year in the fourth quarter of 2024. In food, Shangkoujia Agriculture's products are fully automatically packaged, and Xinweier Glass uses intelligent equipment for high-temperature forming of glassware. As of 2024, the district had built 3 municipal-level smart factories and 18 municipal-level digital workshops (4 added that year), including 5 digital workshops and 1 smart factory in the integrated circuit field.
