Hechuan commands the confluence of the Jialing, Qu and Fu rivers and has served since the Ming and Qing dynasties as a distribution hub for salt, grain and cotton in eastern Sichuan, with well-salt boiling and cotton-hemp weaving as its earliest handicraft mainstays (specific dates and output figures to be verified). The skeleton of its modern industry comes from Third Front construction. Lingchuan Machinery Plant was founded in Qingping Town, Hechuan County, in 1965 under China South Industries Group, integrating machining, stamping, welding, forging, heat treatment and surface treatment; its main products included series of artillery shells, wheels and mufflers for micro-cars, and deep-well oil pumps. It drove machining support industries around Qingping and Tuchang before relocating to Longquanyi, Chengdu, in 2000. Construction began in 1966 on state-run Huachuan Machinery Plant (Plant 204) at Shihuicao, Damiao Village, Caojie. Covering 108.2 hectares, it was a large pyrotechnic-products plant built under the national ordnance industry base plan; it was partially completed and put into production in 1970 and passed final acceptance in 1975, comprising five zones for machining, pyrotechnic production, primer assembly and development, main power transformation and main storage. From 1971 to 1986 it developed and produced 36 military and 6 civilian products; after 1986 its main products shifted to 9 series and 46 varieties of motorcycle magnetos. It relocated to Longquanyi, Chengdu, in batches from 1992, completing the move in 2003; the former site is now Chongqing College of Humanities and Technology. In the same period, Hechuan also contributed militia-style militarized labor to the construction of the Xiangyang–Chongqing Railway and the First Fu River Bridge.

In 2024, Hechuan District's GDP grew 5.5%, with a three-industry structure of 12.7:36.2:51.1. Industrial value added rose 5.9%, above-scale industrial value added grew 8.0%, above-scale industrial enterprises' operating revenue grew 11.8%, and the revenue-to-profit margin was 6.1%. The district has iteratively upgraded its "2446" modern manufacturing cluster system, in which intelligent connected new-energy vehicle (NEV) components are the strongest segment: 2024 output exceeded 17.2 billion yuan, up more than 36% year on year and over 31% of the district's above-scale enterprise output. Hechuan has built Chongqing's first intelligent connected NEV components industrial park, gathering more than 160 auto parts enterprises, 33 of which have entered the supply systems of Changan Automobile and Seres; output of the lightweight components segment grew over 50% in 2024. Among major products: motorcycles 117,511 units, up 61.3%; automotive instruments and meters 98,712 units, up 59.7%; engines 409,790 kW, up 32.8%; cooked meat products 6,547 tons, up 75.4%; lamps and lighting devices 627,861 sets, up 22.4%. Above-scale industrial digital economy output grew 36.0%, strategic emerging industry output grew 18.8%, and high-tech manufacturing output grew 13.9%; industrial investment rose 17.0%. On the consumer goods side, Dejia Foods ranks first in southwest China in canning capacity, and "hot pot ingredients" was approved as a national-level characteristic industrial cluster for SMEs.

Hechuan has not published its industrial robot stock, annual new installations or robot density; all three figures are to be verified. What can be verified are the quantified results of production-line retrofits. Chongqing Pingwei Automotive Systems Co., Ltd., the largest NEV battery enclosure manufacturer in southwest China, settled in the Jiufeng cluster of Hechuan High-Tech Zone in March 2023. It now runs more than 20 production lines in an "island-style" production mode, with full MES and inspection system coverage and a 100% CNC-ization rate of key processes, equipped with CMT automatic welding and CNC machining centers and an annual capacity of 1.8 million sets. Its NEV battery enclosure smart factory — including two digital workshops for the BX4 battery aluminum enclosure and the MS11 battery top cover and aluminum enclosure — will exceed 180,000 units of annual capacity once completed, and is expected to raise production efficiency by 20%, shorten the R&D cycle by 33.3%, cut operating costs by 28.8% and improve energy utilization by 15.3%. Production lines No. 9 and No. 10, added in 2024, use robotic automatic welding and lifted production efficiency by 50%. Anrui Optoelectronics' X1EV front combination lamp high-efficiency assembly digital workshop has an equipment digitalization rate of 74.5%, a 100% network-connection rate for digitalized equipment at key processes, and a 92.7% data collection rate on key equipment. Hechuan Body supplies Changan Deepal, combining continuous automated stamping lines with fully automated welding lines using Farak robots from Japan. Equipment types are dominated by six-axis welding robots, stamping load/unload robots, AGVs and machine vision.
