Jiangbei's industrial foundation was laid by the wartime inland relocation of ordnance plants. Before Nanjing fell in the winter of 1937, the Jinling Arsenal, led by director Li Chenggan, retreated westward with more than a thousand employees, arriving at Bojishi in Jiangbei (today's Liujiatai area). The following year it was renamed the No. 21 Arsenal of the Ordnance Administration — the predecessor of Changan Automobile — with its main plant at Wulidian. Relocated around the same time were: the former Guangdong Pajiang Arsenal, which moved to Guojiatuo in 1938 and was renamed Plant No. 50, later known as Wangjiang Plant — its shell fuzes and 60-mm mortars saw action in the Third Battle of Changsha; the former Zhuzhou Artillery Technology Research Office, which moved to Zhongshutuo and became Plant No. 10, later Jiangling Machine Plant; the former Jinan Arsenal, reorganized as Plant No. 30, which built a branch plant at Maoxi; and the former Gongxian Arsenal branch, which set up the Chongqing branch of Plant No. 23 at Dongjiaxi. During the war, Jiangbei's ordnance enterprises accounted for more than 40% of both the total installed equipment and the workforce of all enterprises in Chongqing at the time. During Third Front construction, Changan Plant undertook the turnkey construction of the Qingshan, Changfeng and Changqing plants, transferring 655 pieces of equipment and 2,257 employees in the process; Jiangling Plant sent cadres and workers to build Plant No. 354 and the Qianwei Instrument Plant. In the 1980s, the "ten-li Wangjiang" belt held hundreds of factories; they relocated out one after another from the 1990s, and the former Wangjiang Plant site is now the Yangpaoju 1862 cultural-creative park and the No. 10 Arsenal traditional-character district.

In 2024, 152 above-scale industrial enterprises in Jiangbei District completed gross output of 158.77 billion yuan, up 5.2%; above-scale industrial value added grew 7.2%, and above-scale industrial profits reached 8.35 billion yuan, up 127.0%. Automobiles and home appliances are the two pillars, with output value up 7.3% and 6.2% respectively. Full-year automobile output was 726,000 units (including 356,000 NEVs, up 33.4%); household washing machines 6.147 million units, air conditioners 5.377 million units, refrigerators 1.679 million units, and rubber tires 5.864 million units. Strategic emerging industry output among above-scale enterprises reached 80.92 billion yuan, up 24.6% — 51.0% of total above-scale industrial output. The district has built a "22411" modern manufacturing cluster system: two leading industries (intelligent connected NEVs and next-generation electronic information manufacturing), two pillar industries (software and information services, and intelligent equipment and smart manufacturing), four characteristic-advantage industries (new energy and new-type energy storage, advanced materials, biomedicine, and consumer goods), supported by 11 "rising star" industries. The main industrial battlefield is the Chongqing Gangcheng Industrial Park, established in 2002 with an approved area of 6.83 square kilometers. More than 950 enterprises have moved in, including Haier, Sulian and Dencare Oral Care, and above-scale gross industrial output in the park reached 29.05 billion yuan in 2024. District-wide industrial R&D intensity has exceeded 3.1%, and more than 90 above-scale manufacturing enterprises have established R&D departments.

Jiangbei District has not published its industrial robot stock, annual new installations or robot density; all three figures are to be verified. Verifiable automation applications are concentrated in three types of production lines: complete vehicles, home appliances and rail transit equipment. Seres' automobile smart factory integrates AI vision with big data, achieves 100% automation of key processes, and reaches a blue-light inspection precision of 0.05 mm, inspecting over 600 key points per product with full quality traceability. Chongqing Haier's dishwasher interconnected factory is the world's first "smart + 5G" interconnected factory in the dishwasher industry, capable of customized production, with the product manufacturing-to-delivery cycle shortened by 55%. Changan Automobile's Digital Intelligence Factory has achieved large-scale end-to-end 5G connectivity for production equipment and uses cloud-generated production line templates to link orders with production tasks, reducing manual intervention and startup preparation time. CRRC Changchun, the largest rail transit equipment manufacturer in southwest China, settled in Jiangbei in 2007 and has since drawn more than 40 supporting enterprises to the area. In 2024, new smart factory and digital workshop projects landed in Jiangbei: Changan Automobile's engine machining-and-assembly digital workshop and Haier's refrigeration component digital workshop were selected as municipal-level digital workshops of the year, and Haier washing appliances' smart factory with an annual capacity of 500,000 dishwashers was selected as a municipal-level smart factory. Equipment types are dominated by six-axis welding and handling robots, AGVs, and machine vision inspection.
