Yunyang is one of the counties most deeply affected by the Three Gorges Project and the most-discussed sample of the "industrial hollowing-out" problem. According to public reports in 2007, 181 industrial and mining enterprises — 96.7% of the county's total — were submerged by the Three Gorges Reservoir; many newly built shops stood vacant and the unemployed exceeded 10,000. Yunyang's industry effectively started from zero alongside the rebuilding of the new town. Cooperation with Huawei began in 2018, producing the 100,000-square-meter Digital Intelligent Forest Town big data industrial park, home to a cluster led by data as a key factor, smart manufacturing and pan-big-data; with the China Academy of Industrial Internet's Chongqing branch, Yunyang built the country's first industrial internet regional operations center. Development has since followed the "2238" modern manufacturing cluster system. Jintian Plastics, Yunhai Pharmaceutical, Yunyang Salt Chemical and Yunyang Crankshaft have grown into backbone enterprises; 13 key industrial projects, including Hengshun Vinegar and Yuxinteng expansions, were completed and put into production in the first half of 2024; and 19 industrial technical upgrade projects — such as Xianludong mineral water technical upgrades and Yangguang plastic products capacity expansion — were filed and implemented. From its early weak state, industrial value added grew to 13.003 billion yuan in 2024, and manufacturing's share of GDP rose to 19.7% — among the largest industrial economies in northeastern Chongqing.

In 2024, Yunyang's GDP reached 63.625 billion yuan, up 5.1%, with a three-sector structure of 11.9:40.5:47.6. Industrial value added was 13.003 billion yuan, up 3.6% and 20.4% of county GDP; above-scale industrial value added grew 4.5%, and manufacturing's share of GDP reached 19.7%, up 4.3 percentage points year on year. At year-end there were 145 above-scale industrial enterprises; total profits and taxes grew 10.8% and total profits 8.0%; gross above-scale industrial output value grew 2.6%, within which energy industry output value rose 24.7%, TCM processing output value 7.3%, and green food output value fell 2.7%. The "2238" modern manufacturing clusters delivered output value of 36.06 billion yuan in 2024, up 5.5%, with technical upgrade investment growing 77.4% and 6 new municipal-level-or-above green factories. Among leading enterprises, Jintian Plastics and Yunhai Pharmaceutical were named to the citywide "Double Hundred" enterprise list; Yunyang Salt Chemical is the largest single-site salt producer in the Chengdu-Chongqing region; Jinyi New Materials holds 80% of the domestic market for spherical silica micropowder. A cumulative 43 national high-tech enterprises, 26 municipal-level specialized and innovative SMEs and 7 municipal-level enterprise technology centers have been cultivated. In sci-tech innovation, projects such as phase II of "China Compound Eye" and the advanced aerospace power R&D and testing base have landed. Targets for 2025: total industrial output value above 22 billion yuan, manufacturing value added above 20% of GDP, and 2 new digital workshops and 2 new green factories.

Yunyang's automation upgrading is deep at specific points but dispersed across the county. In food and salt chemicals, Yunyang Salt Chemical — a national-level green factory — has successively completed breakthrough projects including a mine automation control system, "manipulator" automation upgrades for edible salt packaging, a flexible salt production line retrofit, and an online automatic soot-blowing system for its cogeneration boilers; in the workshop, everything from product conveying to bagging, shrink-wrapping and palletizing runs on fully automatic production lines. In the first half of 2024 it invested about 18 million yuan in technical upgrades and equipment renewal, cutting comprehensive product energy consumption by about 3%; in 2025 it launched a 3-million-yuan salt production automation project and a 7-million-yuan ultra-low-emission cogeneration upgrade. In TCM, Chongqing Three Gorges Yunhai Pharmaceutical's smart decoction workshop delivers fully digital management of prescription receipt, compounding, decoction, packaging and delivery. In new energy, Chongqing Yunwei New Energy's production line — from automatic sorting and insulating coating to lithium battery packaging, formation and grading, and secondary sealing — runs entirely on automated equipment. At county level, 38 technical upgrade projects were implemented in 2024; a cumulative 2 national-level and 6 municipal-level green factories have been created; 1 municipal-level digital workshop has been created (2 more are under public notice); and Jintian Plastics has successfully created a municipal-level digital workshop. There is no publicly available authoritative figure for Yunyang County's installed industrial robot base, annual new installations, or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers) — all three to be verified.
