The starting point of Nan'an's modern industry was the Tongyuan Mint. In 1905 (the 31st year of the Guangxu reign), the Sichuan-Hankou Railway Company bought about 200 mu of land at Sujiaba on the south bank of the Yangtze to build a plant, importing one set each of forging and pressing equipment from Britain and Germany (today's Yingchang Street and Dechang Street take their names from this). Coin minting formally began in 1913. Chongqing's first large mechanized industrial enterprise of the modern era, its first electric light and its first generation of industrial workers all came from here. The site was converted to ordnance production in 1930 and taken over by the Nationalist government during the war; after absorbing ordnance plants relocated from Shanghai, Nanjing, Shandong and Shaanxi, it was named the No. 20 Factory of the Ordnance Administration. It was renamed the Changjiang Electric Works in 1957, moved to the Chayuan New District in 2004, and became the Chongqing Changjiang Electric Industrial Group in 2011. The Danzishi area is another thread: during the war, the Nationalist government's Ministry of Economic Affairs designated it a key receiving site for relocated factories, and on top of the existing twenty or thirty plants, another twenty or thirty enterprises from the lower Yangtze moved in — including the Wuhan Yuhua Yarn Mill sited at Qiaojuetuo (later the Chongqing No. 3 Cotton Textile Mill), the Rong family's Shenxin No. 4 Mill and Fuxin No. 5 Flour Mill at Maobeituo, and the Hankou Tai'an Yarn Mill (later the No. 1 Cotton Mill of the Ministry of War) and the No. 30 Arsenal of the Ordnance Administration at Wangjiatuo. Their yarn and cloth output at one point accounted for half of that in the Nationalist-controlled areas. After 1949, further additions included the Chongqing Flax Mill, the Chongqing No. 2 Dyeing and Weaving Mill, the Southwest Pharmaceutical No. 2 Plant, the Qinjian Chemical Plant and the Chongqing Cigarette Factory. The industrial mainstay has now moved to the Chongqing ETDZ in Chayuan.

In 2024, Nan'an District's GDP reached 113.316 billion yuan, up 5.9%; secondary industry value added was 39.378 billion yuan, of which industrial value added was 29.436 billion yuan, up 5.2%; above-scale industrial value added grew 6.1%. Among the pillar industries, four rose and four fell: electronics accounted for 46.7% of above-scale industrial output, up 7.0%; motorcycles grew 41%, accounting for 8.8%; equipment accounted for 14.2%, up 2.1%; energy industry accounted for 4.8%, up 7.3%; and consumer goods accounted for 14.7%, down 0.4%. Among major products: motorcycles 1.034 million units, up 39.9%; room air conditioners 9.672 million units, up 7.9%; mobile handsets 17.104 million units, down 9.5%; beverages 188,000 tons, up 16.7%. Industrial investment grew 48.4% and investment in the purchase of equipment and tools grew 63.1%. Industry is almost entirely concentrated in the Chongqing ETDZ — by the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period its share of district industry had risen to 98.4%, contributing 50% of Nan'an's GDP and 90% of its industrial output; in 2024 it ranked 41st nationally and 1st in Chongqing in the Ministry of Commerce's comprehensive evaluation of national-level ETDZs. The district has built a "3+2" industrial system with three 100-billion-yuan-class pillars (smart terminals, software and information, big health) and two 500-billion-yuan-class sectors (energy conservation and environmental protection, automotive electronics). Above-scale industrial operating revenue was 116.5 billion yuan; smartphone output accounts for 22% of the city's total, and annual output of smart household air conditioners has exceeded 9.5 million sets — nearly half of citywide capacity.

Nan'an District has not published its industrial robot stock or robot density; the figures are to be verified. What can be verified are two levels: system integration and production-line automation. On the integration side, Chongqing Fulunde Industrial builds customized production lines for NEV makers including Li Auto, NIO, Huawei and Tesla; its output value grew 55.8% year on year in the first quarter of 2024, and it took orders for 7 production lines worth nearly 200 million yuan, holding a 50% market share among China's top ten OEMs. Twenty service providers, including Mengxun Electronics and Fulunde, were selected for Chongqing's 2024 resource pool of manufacturing digital-transformation service providers. On the line side, Chongqing Midea Refrigeration Equipment is the largest central air-conditioning production base in southwest China, with output of 5.0771 million air-conditioner sets worth 11.16 billion yuan in the first half of 2024. In Shuanghuan Driveline's gear finishing workshop, robotic arms now handle loading and machining, greatly reducing oil stains on the floor and manual operations. The Chongqing ETDZ has cumulatively built more than 6,000 5G base stations, put the JD supercomputing center and the SenseTime AI computing center into service, and established 2 national-level smart manufacturing demonstration factories, 7 municipal-level smart factories and 47 digital workshops, with over 25% of above-scale manufacturers completing maturity assessments. On the 2024 municipal list, Chongqing Midea Refrigeration, Chongqing Midea General Refrigeration and Vivo Mobile Communication were named smart factories, and the Chongqing Gas Compressor Works was selected as an industrial internet new-model demonstration project. Equipment is dominated by six-axis robots, SCARA robots, AGVs and machine vision.
