Chengkou's industrial base is thin. According to the "Chengkou County Gazetteer," before 1949 there were only a handful of private enterprises in salt boiling, papermaking, hand weaving, and bamboo and wood processing. During the "whole people running industry" campaign of 1958, state-owned and collective enterprises briefly grew to 1,031; cutbacks began in 1961 and a major adjustment followed in 1962, so that by the 1960s only a few remained — the salt works, the coal plant, the newspaper printing plant, the refined tea factory, the Xiaohekou power plant, and the county machinery works. In the 1970s the "five small" industries (machinery manufacturing, building materials, grain and oil food processing, and small-scale chemicals) developed somewhat; 1975 gross industrial output was 6.86 million yuan (at constant 1990 prices), 2.25 times the 3.04 million yuan of 1965. The real turning point was mining: the Chengkou County Manganese Powder Plant, built in 1977, was the county's first mining enterprise — initially 20 workers, each required to produce only 250 kg of manganese ore powder a month — and it gradually grew into a manganese product line covering two categories (metallurgy and chemicals) and seven product types. In the 1980s the county settled on the path of "power as the base, roads first, playing to mineral advantages, and developing manganese and barium series products." In 1990 countywide gross industrial output was 44.82 million yuan; main products were 44,200 tons of manganese ore, 26,600 tons of manganese products, 4,316 tons of barium ore, 1,235 tons of barium powder, 20,500 tons of coal, 13.9 million kWh of electricity, and 7,392 tons of cement; the county manganese powder plant's manganese sulfate won a silver medal of the national Spark Program. By 2009 Chengkou had built the capacity to produce 1 million tons of manganese ore a year, and its cumulative proven barium reserves of 68.774 million tons ranked first in Asia, earning it the name "mineral capital of the west."

In 2024, Chengkou's GDP was 7.588 billion yuan, up 5.1%, with a three-sector structure of 18.5:23.2:58.3 — one of the smallest industrial economies in Chongqing. Above-scale industrial value added grew 4.6%, and above-scale industrial output was 1.756 billion yuan, up 11.5%. By category, mining grew 68.1% and manufacturing 11.7%, while electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply fell 13.6% (hydropower down 46.6%). The leading direction is green industry: above-scale food and agricultural product processing, green building materials, and barium new materials posted output of 700 million yuan, 220 million yuan, and 360 million yuan, up 4%, 30%, and 45% respectively; the ratio of agricultural product processing output to gross agricultural output was 0.54:1. There are 23 above-scale industrial enterprises; countywide gross industrial output was 3 billion yuan and industrial investment grew 49.3%. Nine projects were completed and put into use, including the Pingba SME Eco-Home (phase one), and 11 projects broke ground, including Jiuchongshan Mineral Water's green zero-carbon smart factory and the Gaofa barium mine technical upgrade. On resources and agriculture, medicinal herb acreage held steady at 380,000 mu with an output value of 1.1 billion yuan, and the geo-authentic medicinal herb set "Cheng Ba Wei" (Chengkou's eight herbs) was published; Chengkou aged cured meat and Chengkou mountain chicken won national geographical indication trademarks. Construction is an important prop of the county economy: in 2024 construction value added grew 20.2% and gross output broke 1 billion yuan. Overall assessment: Chengkou's manufacturing is small in scale and short in chain; industry centers on resource-based mining and beneficiation, primary processing of agricultural and forestry products, and small hydropower.

Chengkou is one of the counties with the sparsest industrial robot application in Chongqing: in 2024 it had only 23 above-scale industrial enterprises and 1.756 billion yuan of above-scale industrial output, dominated by mining and beneficiation, building materials, small hydropower, and primary processing of agricultural and forestry products — lacking the complete-vehicle, electronics, and machining lines that generate scale demand for robots. Two categories of automation investment can be confirmed. First, automatic control systems for process industries and mines: the Gaofa barium mine technical upgrade and the computer monitoring and speed-governing systems at small hydropower stations fall within the scope of DCS/PLC and instrumentation automation and involve no robot bodies. Second, standalone automation in food and agricultural product processing: in 2024 above-scale manufacturing, food and agricultural product processing output was 303 million yuan (up 27.7%), inorganic salt and non-metallic mineral manufacturing 74 million yuan (up 45.2%), and building materials and other manufacturing 57 million yuan (down 6.7%); cured-meat processing output grew 12.0% while medicinal herb processing fell 19.3%. Jiuchongshan Mineral Water's "green zero-carbon smart factory" is a rare whole-line smart project in the county; it broke ground in 2024 and centers on continuous bottle blowing, filling, labeling, case packing, and palletizing. To be clear: there is no public authoritative tally of Chengkou's industrial robot stock, annual new installations, or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers) — all three are to be verified; we also know of no specific cases of operational six-axis robots or AGVs in the county.
