Pengshui sits along the Wu River in the Wuling Mountains. Its industry has long been dominated by hydropower, cement, shoemaking, flue-cured tobacco and primary processing of agricultural and forestry products, with no backbone manufacturing enterprises. Sweet potato is the industry with the deepest history: more than two hundred years ago, people in Pengshui along the Wu River in the Wuling Mountains already grew sweet potatoes on a large scale, and Miao ancestors had long processed fern tubers into "duba starch" and baked them into "duajuanzi" rolls — but the crop remained at the subsistence and primary-processing stage for a long time. In the past a jin of fresh tubers sold for only a few jiao, while processing into crystal-thread sweet potato starch noodles could lift the price to over ten yuan; with limited deep-processing scale and weak brand building, however, an industry was slow to take shape. Around 2016, enterprises such as Liyuan Agriculture in Shilong Village, Xintian Town, introduced fully automated production lines and extended sweet potato processing into instant sweet potato vermicelli, potato noodles and other products, and the sector finally began to scale up. In energy, the Datang Wujiang Pengshui hydropower station was built on the Wu River and forms the mainstay of county industry. In 2024, Pengshui successfully explored the city's first large glass-grade sandstone deposit with reserves on the order of tens of millions of tons, opening space for a new materials industry. In recent years the county has defined five eco-industrial clusters — clean energy, health food, ethnic medicine, characteristic light industry and new materials — and pursues paired collaborative development with Yongchuan District and Tongnan District, channeling deep-processing projects for agricultural sideline products into the "Tongnan District–Pengshui Autonomous County" enclave industrial park.

In 2024, Pengshui's GDP reached 38.459 billion yuan, up 7.1%, with the three sectors structured at 11.4:33.8:54.8. Industrial value added grew 8.6% year on year. Above-scale industrial enterprises delivered a gross output value of 6.067 billion yuan, up 8.6%. Split by light and heavy industry, light industry accounted for 516 million yuan, down 18.7%, while heavy industry reached 5.551 billion yuan, up 12.1%. By sector: agricultural and sideline food processing 177 million yuan, down 9.1%; shoemaking 89 million yuan, down 33.2%; non-metallic mineral products 795 million yuan, down 14.5%; electric power production and supply 2.199 billion yuan, down 22.3%; gas production and supply 2.286 billion yuan, up 20.0%. Main business revenue of above-scale industrial enterprises reached 6.109 billion yuan, up 8.8%, with total profits of 1.025 billion yuan, up 75.3%. Key product outputs: hydroelectric generation 5.675 billion kWh (up 27.9%), cement 1.177 million tons, and rubber shoes 4.55 million pairs (down 31.1%). Among the five major eco-industrial clusters, the Datang Wujiang Pengshui hydropower station generated 5.27 billion kWh with an output value of 1.44 billion yuan (up 32%). Sweet potatoes were grown on a stable 300,000 mu and 36 processing lines were built; processing entities of all types handled 168,000 tons of fresh tubers a year and produced 30,000 tons of sweet potato starch, and the full industry chain's output value exceeded 1.8 billion yuan. Industrial investment for the year totaled 1.52 billion yuan, up 26.8%.

Pengshui's above-scale industrial output stands at 6.067 billion yuan and is dominated by process industries such as electric power, gas, and cement, so industrial robot applications are extremely limited; automation shows up mainly in continuous food and beverage production lines and in process control for power generation. In food and beverage, Chongqing Ayida Taiji Spring Water Co., Ltd. operates a fully automatic high-speed canned water line with annual capacity of over 100 million cans, and its annual production and sales scale has exceeded 500 million yuan. Sweet potato processors in Pengshui Industrial Park have built automated washing, grading, and deep-processing lines. Chongqing Miaoshu Agriculture invested 150 million yuan in a starch deep-processing project with eight lines for fresh and dried sweet potato noodles and similar products; at full capacity it expects annual sales revenue above 200 million yuan. Liyuan Agriculture has completed a starch processing line integrating mechanical washing, processing, sedimentation, and baking, plus a fully automatic modern line for refined glass noodles, processing over 5,000 tons of fresh tubers a year. Countywide, sweet potato processing entities handle 168,000 tons of fresh tubers annually, and above-scale food and agricultural product processing output in the park exceeded 300 million yuan in the first half of the year. In power generation, 26 hydropower stations including the Datang Wujiang Pengshui station use computer monitoring systems for automatic generation control and load dispatch - SCADA/PLC territory. To be clear: no public, authoritative figures exist for Pengshui County's industrial robot installed base, annual new installations, or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers); all three are to be verified. No specific cases of operating six-axis robots, AGVs, or collaborative robots in the county have been found so far.
