Changshou was a key Chongqing site for chemical and shipbuilding industries under Third Front construction. In July 1965 the preparatory office of the Sichuan Dyestuff Works moved from Yanziji, Nanjing, to Sanping Brigade, Gufo Commune, Changshou; work began in February 1966, phase one was completed in February 1979, and the whole plant was finished and commissioned in December 1984, at a total investment of 139 million yuan. In October 1967 Changfeng Chemical Works was built at Tiechangwan, Fuyuan Commune; it entered production in 1974 with an investment of 35 million yuan, making organic fine chemicals. In July 1970 Chuanjiang Shipyard was built at Zoujiatuo, Yanjia; it began operating in December 1980 with annual shipbuilding capacity of 16,500 tons. The most critical project was the Sichuan Vinylon Plant: in December 1972 the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee decided to build the plant at Zhujiaba, Yanjia; in May 1973 a contract was signed with France's SPECIM for a combined vinyl acetate–methanol plant; and in June 1974 a contract followed with Japan's Kuraray for complete equipment to produce 45,000 tons of polyvinyl alcohol a year. Ground was broken that August; the full-process, single-feed trial run succeeded in December 1979; and official production began on July 1, 1983. The plant became one of the country's four major chemical fiber bases and the only ultra-large chemical-fiber enterprise in China using natural gas as its main feedstock; it was restructured and renamed Chuanwei Chemical in November 2017. All these projects were sited under the "close to the mountains, dispersed, and concealed" principle in valleys along the Yangtze — Sichuan Dyestuff Works at Gufo, Changfeng at Fuyuan, Chuanwei at Zhujiaba in Yanjia, and Chuanjiang Shipyard at Zoujiatuo in Yanjia — sharing Yangtze water transport and natural gas resources to form a complete chain of chemicals, chemical fiber, dyestuffs, and shipbuilding.

In 2025, Changshou's GDP was 111.88 billion yuan, up 6.9% — first in the municipality. Industrial value added was 55.73 billion yuan; above-scale industrial value added grew 6.4%; gross above-scale industrial output was 169.3 billion yuan, up 2.3%; above-scale industrial enterprise profits were 3.4 billion yuan, up 174.4%. The Changshou ETDZ (approved by the State Council as a national-level economic and technological development zone in 2010) posted 166.8 billion yuan of gross above-scale industrial output in 2025 and hosts 957 enterprises, including 29 Fortune Global 500 companies, 70 multinationals, and 70 listed companies — among them BASF, LG Chem, INEOS, Sinopec, Baowu Chongqing Steel, Yuntianhua, Enjie, and Capchem — and ranks perennially among the top 30 chemical parks nationwide. Under the "2324" system, natural gas chemical new materials and advanced metal materials form the two leading clusters, with advanced materials grown into the district's first 100-billion-yuan industry. In 2025, strategic emerging manufacturing output was 42.47 billion yuan — 25.1% of above-scale industry and sixth in the municipality; automobile manufacturing reached 28.32 billion yuan, up 6.0%. Among key enterprises, Chongqing Steel posted 30.57 billion yuan of output, Chuanwei 6.09 billion yuan, and BASF 6.44 billion yuan. The Changshou ETDZ, approved by the State Council in 2010 as a national-level zone, has long ranked in the national top 30 of chemical parks and has formed three distinctive clusters — natural gas chemical new materials, silicon-based new materials, and new energy materials — with more than 120 above-scale chemical and new-material enterprises built and running; advanced materials is the district's first 100-billion-yuan industry.

Changshou's industrial automation centers on process control, resource recycling, and safety inspection for continuous production units rather than discrete assembly. At the end of 2023, Chuanwei Chemical commissioned China's first hydrogen purification unit using by-product hydrogen from natural gas, producing 6,400 kg of high-purity hydrogen a day — enough for 260 hydrogen fuel-cell heavy trucks — and holding more than 80% of the Chongqing market. It has also built a 35,000-ton-per-year waste sulfuric acid regeneration and recycling unit, cutting costs by nearly 80 million yuan a year. On safety control, the Changshou ETDZ has built a five-tier water-environment risk prevention system covering the unit, enterprise, zone, park, and river levels, able to intercept 1.7305 million cubic meters of wastewater; "smart operation and safety control of the chemical park" is on the city's "AI+" comprehensive scenario list. In 2025 the district ranked first in the municipality in the number of technical upgrading projects implemented, with such investment growing 86.1%, and was selected for the national pilot program of new-type manufacturing technical upgrading cities. In agriculture, the Southwest Center of the China National Rice Research Institute and the Chongqing Grain and Oil Industry Brain were completed and put into use, a 50,000-ton egg processing project entered production, and Changshou's egg and organic fish output ranks first in the municipality. Detailed data such as the district's industrial robot stock and the number of robot-using enterprises have not been publicly released (to be verified). Robot applications in Changshou focus on special inspection and process control rather than discrete assembly: the explosion-proof intelligent inspection robots at Chongqing Changfeng Chemical Industry cruise autonomously, monitor combustible and toxic gases in real time with automatic infrared thermometry and HD video, and transmit data over a dedicated 5G network to the control platform and the emergency rescue command center for early warning.
