Beibei's industry began with the Sanxia Dyeing and Weaving Factory from the era of Lu Zuofu's rural construction; during the War of Resistance, Tianfu Coal Mine secured 60% of Chongqing's fuel supply. The real industrial skeleton, however, was laid by Third Front construction. In 1964, Hongyan Machinery Works relocated from Wuxi to Beibei, and Shanghai Power Machinery Works (Puling Machinery Works) moved to Dashi Pan in Xiema. In 1965, the Ministry of Machinery Industry decided to move plants supporting thermal instrumentation from Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuxi, and Suzhou to Beibei to form Sichuan Instrument General Works, covering Xiema, Chengjiang, and Qingmuguan; it later developed into the Silian Instrument Group. Institutions relocated in the same period included the Chongqing Instrument Materials Research Institute of the Ministry of Machinery Industry (sited at Sanhuashi, Chengjiang) and the Third Design Institute of the Ministry of Machinery Industry (moved from Tianjin; today's China Machinery Zhonglian Engineering Co., Ltd.). From the 1960s to the 1970s, more than 20 enterprises, 4 ministerial-level research institutes, and 3 schools moved into Beibei, spanning instruments, machinery, pharmaceuticals, glass, energy, and other sectors. These relocations made Beibei one of the country's three major instrumentation production and research bases. After the 1980s, Puling and Hongyan went bankrupt one after another, while Sichuan Instrument (Chuanyi) and the Third Design Institute kept operating. In 2019, the whole of Xiema Subdistrict was incorporated into the Chongqing High-Tech Zone expansion park, positioned to focus on electronic information, NEVs and components, intelligent robots, and new materials.

In 2024, Beibei District's GDP was 92.501 billion yuan, up 5.1%; gross above-scale industrial output was 103.19 billion yuan, up 6.2%; above-scale industrial value added grew 6.0%. Among the 342 above-scale industrial legal entities and production activity units, the eight major industries posted "four up, three down, one flat": automobiles grew 14.0%, motorcycles 14.0%, electronics 9.4%, and energy industry 3.6%; equipment was flat; materials fell 7.7%, pharmaceuticals 8.8%, and consumer goods 10.4%. Gross output of strategic emerging industries was 68.671 billion yuan, up 5.7%; output of core digital economy industries was 58.279 billion yuan, up 11.6%; strategic emerging manufacturing accounted for 67.8% of output. Major product volumes: 365.3201 million LCD panels (up 24.2%), 1.3098 million industrial automatic regulating instruments and control systems, 529,600 optical instruments (up 22.1%), 37,100 complete vehicles, 302,400 complete motorcycles, and 6.2512 million kilowatts of engines. The district is cultivating a "1+2+4+X" modern manufacturing cluster and running "strong dragon" projects such as BOE capacity release, the Silian Group headquarters base, Ruilan Auto's structural optimization, and Senci Electromechanical's performance doubling; BOE's output grew 13.4%. Software and information services revenue reached 8.005 billion yuan, up 200.1%. During the year the district added 11 gazelle enterprises and 3 potential unicorns.

Beibei is one of the few districts in Chongqing that lists industrial robots among product outputs in its statistical communiqué: in 2024, above-scale industrial enterprises produced 3,147 sets of industrial robots, down 27.1% year on year. The measurement basis must be distinguished — this is annual production (a flow), not the cumulative operational stock, nor annual new installations. There is no authoritative data on Beibei's industrial robot stock or on robot density by the IFR definition (units per 10,000 industrial workers); both are to be verified. On the demand side, the district is one of the country's three major instrumentation bases: Chuanyi Co. already uses robots to weld sensors in its flow-instrument workshop, and the Chongqing Materials Research Institute, Silian Group, Senci Electromechanical, and Ruilan Auto are the main users. In 2024 the district implemented 88 technical upgrading projects and completed 1.2 billion yuan of such investment, up 9.8%; 3 enterprises were selected among the city's first batch of advanced-level smart factories; 3 new digital workshops were certified; and the city's first digital distribution network demonstration zone was built. On the supply side, since the whole of Xiema Subdistrict was incorporated into the Chongqing High-Tech Zone expansion park in 2019, intelligent robots have been named a key development direction, but local capacity and shipment data for complete robot machines are to be verified. Equipment types center on small six-axis robots, SCARA robots, precision assembly and welding workstations, and machine vision inspection.
