The first cornerstone of Yongchuan's industry came from Third Front construction. In 1960 the administrative seat of Jiangjin Prefecture moved to Yongchuan, and subsequently Chongqing Hydraulic Parts Factory (formerly Yonghong Machinery Factory), Chongqing Hongjiang Machinery Factory (formerly Sichuan Oil Pump, Oil Nozzle and Governor Factory), Chongqing Yuejin Machinery Factory (formerly Chongqing Diesel Engine Parts Factory), three electronics research institutes — No. 127, No. 128 and No. 164 — and Depot 235 relocated there. According to local media reports, Institute No. 1424, which moved to Yongchuan, was the birthplace of China's first large-scale integrated circuit, and the ICs used in the Dongfanghong-1 satellite also came from this institute (this institutional history appears in local media; details to be verified). After 2000 Yongchuan rebuilt its industrial system: Lee & Man Paper moved in in 2006 as the first industry leader, and in 2017 Great Wall Motor decided to build a plant in Yongchuan — only 14 months passed from first talks to full output. Talent supply is the other main thread: Yongchuan proposed building a "vocational education city" in 2004, issued "24 measures for vocational education" in 2017, and the 2021 Outline of the Development Plan for the Chengdu-Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle explicitly supported building a western vocational education base. The city now has 19 colleges with about 200,000 students, supplying more than 50,000 technical and skilled personnel each year. Most of these Third Front units were sited along the Chengdu-Chongqing railway and Yangtze waterway, turning Yongchuan from an agricultural county town into an industrial town with hydraulic parts, oil pumps and nozzles, diesel engine parts and electronics research institutes; Institute No. 1424 and peers provided the initial technical core for the later electronic information industry (institutional history details to be verified).

In 2025, Yongchuan's above-scale industrial output value reached 105.07 billion yuan, with 394 above-scale industrial enterprises; Yongchuan High-Tech Zone (one zone, three parks) hosts 1,150 enterprises, including 284 above-scale industrial enterprises, with annual above-scale industrial output value of 94.09 billion yuan, up 6.9%, and industrial investment of 7.32 billion yuan, up 20.5%. During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, district GDP topped 119 billion yuan with average annual growth of 5.7%, and above-scale industrial value added grew an average 6.1% per year. Yongchuan has built the country's largest mid-to-high-end pickup truck production base and largest single-site household paper production base. Industry follows the "3322" structure: three key sectors — intelligent connected NEVs, motorcycles and parts, new materials, and big data and AI; three advantaged sectors — consumer goods, electronic information and high-end equipment; two future sectors — the low-altitude economy and biotechnology; and two emerging sectors — intelligent robots and new energy equipment. Chain leader Great Wall Motor's Yongchuan base rolled out more than 1.2 million vehicles during the 14th Five-Year Plan; in 2025 it produced 248,000 vehicles with an output value of 35.03 billion yuan, up 20.5% — one "Poer" pickup rolls off the line every 72 seconds. Yadea produces 1.65 million vehicles a year, and projects such as SVOLT Power (Fengchao Power) have landed in succession. Intelligent robots are listed as one of the two emerging sectors in the "3322" structure, alongside new energy equipment; Yongchuan's vocational education city now has 19 colleges and about 200,000 students, supplying over 50,000 technical and skilled personnel a year — a local labor pool for the operation, maintenance and commissioning of robot production lines.

Smart upgrading of the old Third Front enterprises is the main thread of Yongchuan's smart manufacturing. Chongqing Hongjiang Machinery built its first digital workshop in 2015 and, from 2016, worked with China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation on a smart manufacturing industrial park, completing 11 lean intelligent automation units based on edge computing, machine vision and proprietary multi-variety flexible adaptive technology; processing efficiency of key processes rose 63.54%. In 2025, Hongjiang Machinery was rated an excellence-level smart factory and SVOLT Power an advanced-level smart factory; the district added 7 municipal-level green factories and 8 digital workshops. On industry direction, intelligent robots are one of the two emerging sectors in the "3322" structure, and Yongchuan Vocational Education Center and other schools offer courses in industrial robot technology applications, supplying local talent for production line operation and maintenance. Autonomous driving is another distinctive scenario: 1,480 km of test roads are open district-wide, and in 2025 autonomous sanitation scenarios covering 1.28 million square meters were opened. In agriculture, Yongchuan Xiuya tea is now made fully automatically in a smart workshop, replacing manual fixation in 200°C iron woks; in 2025, 140 million bags of edible fungi were cultivated with an output value of 830 million yuan. Vehicle production lines are the most automated part of Yongchuan: the welding shop at Great Wall Motor's Yongchuan plant now runs 442 robotic arms, 2 to 4 per station; glazing processes have full machine-vision inspection coverage with multi-camera accuracy of ±0.2 mm; in recent years more than 240 smart transport, painting and welding units have been newly deployed at an investment exceeding 100 million yuan, cutting vehicle takt time from 120 seconds to 72 seconds, with the welding shop's automation rate above 97%.
