Youyang's industry started late and long centered on grain and oil processing, small hydropower and building materials, with few enterprises of scale. From 2008 it used denim production as an entry point to develop the apparel industry; after more than a decade of cultivation, a base in weaving, garment making and washing has taken initial shape. Banxi Industrial Park sits next to the Banxi interchange of the Baomao Expressway, supported by more than 1,700 public rental housing units and a 10,000-square-meter washing wastewater treatment station; its standard factories can accommodate over 100 enterprises along the denim chain. 2023 was another turning point: in March, drawing on resources including 800,000 mu of cropland above 800 meters in elevation, 100,000 mu of terraced fields and 6 million mu of forestland, Youyang launched a modern industrial system led by the "Youyang 800" regional public brand; in December, Kunming Pharmaceutical Group signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with Youyang on the China Resources Sanjiu (Youyang) 10-billion-yuan medical health industry, to jointly build a 10-billion-yuan-class medical health industrial park in Banxi Industrial Park — a partnership traceable more than 30 years back to their artemisinin connection. On February 6, 2025, ground was broken on the technical upgrade and capacity expansion project for Maqin cough syrup and Qiangli loquat syrup, which will raise capacity from 6.67 million boxes to 20 million boxes a year. Camellia oil cultivation has a history of over 1,500 years; once dismissed as "firewood trees" for low added value and scattered layout, it became a real industry only in recent years through the rebuilding of primary and deep processing systems. Industrial investment grew 132.6% in 2024, and the secondary sector's share of the economy exceeded the primary sector's for the first time.

In 2024, Youyang's GDP reached 25.298 billion yuan, up 4.0%: primary industry value added was 4.414 billion yuan, up 1.8%; secondary industry 5.53 billion yuan, up 3.8%; tertiary industry 15.354 billion yuan, up 4.7%. Industrial value added grew 3.1%, with above-scale industrial value added up 4.6%; among the three major sectors, electricity, heat, gas and water production and supply fell 6.9%. Among major industrial products, patent TCM medicine output grew 52.8%, fabric output 27.4%, and edible vegetable oil output 24.8%. The county focuses on three 10-billion-yuan clusters: medical health, fashion apparel, and food and agricultural product processing. In 2024, combined industrial and trade output value of the medical health industry grew 270% year on year; fashion apparel's annual output value topped 1 billion yuan, and Banxi Industrial Park has formed a full chain covering fabrics, garment making, washing, accessories, embroidery, R&D and wholesale, with 15 million pieces produced to order each year; denim enterprises' annual output value exceeded 400 million yuan, with products exported to Sri Lanka via rail-sea intermodal transport; food and agricultural product processing reached a gross output value of 1.7 billion yuan, up 28%; sales of "Youyang 800" products hit 2.18 billion yuan; camellia oil has 8 primary processing plants and 5 deep processing plants at the origin, annual processing capacity of 14,000 tons, and output value of 320 million yuan. During the year, 8 new above-scale industrial enterprises were cultivated and 230 million yuan of technical upgrade investment was completed. Industrial scale remains small: total industrial output value in 2024 was about 7 billion yuan.

Youyang's manufacturing is small-scale and labor-intensive, with extremely limited industrial robot application; automation appears mainly in pharmaceuticals, camellia oil pressing and selected apparel processes. Pharmaceuticals is the most technology-intensive segment: China Resources Sanjiu (Youyang) Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.'s technical upgrade and capacity expansion project for Maqin cough syrup and Qiangli loquat syrup broke ground in February 2025; once completed, capacity will rise from 6.67 million to 20 million boxes a year. On such patent TCM medicine lines, extraction, concentration, filling, inspection, cartoning and case packing are typically handled by linked production lines — dedicated-equipment automation rather than general-purpose industrial robots. In camellia oil processing, seeds pass through nearly 20 steps — screening, drying, pressing, filtration and filling — inside the park's workshop to become finished camellia oil; 8 primary processing plants and 5 deep processing plants were built in 2024, with annual processing capacity of 14,000 tons. The apparel industry still relies on conventional equipment such as sewing machines: although Banxi park has formed a full chain of fabrics, garment making, washing and embroidery, digital production is only getting started. In 2024 Youyang was named a key cultivation entity under the citywide apparel "industry brain" program, with support planned in design and R&D, fabric and accessory supply, and digital production.
