PART 01

Industrialization History

Jiulongpo's industrial history begins with the Hanyang Arsenal's wartime westward relocation. The plant's predecessor was the Hubei Gun and Cannon Factory founded by Zhang Zhidong in 1889; during the War of Resistance it moved west to Xiejiawan and became the No. 1 Arsenal of the Nationalist government's Ordnance Administration, producing hundreds of thousands of rifles, submachine guns and machine guns a year and supplying nearly one-third of the nation's weapons and ammunition for the war effort. In 1942, to evade Japanese air raids, 107 production caves were carved into the riverside cliffs. Renamed the state-run Jianshe Machine Tool Works in 1957, it entered a technical cooperation with Japan's Yamaha in 1982; Jianshe-Yamaha motorcycles were all the rage for a time. The plant relocated in 2009, and its remaining air-raid tunnels were converted into the Chongqing Jianchuan Museum in 2017. During the First Five-Year Plan, the No. 507 Power Plant (later the Chongqing Power Plant) — one of the 156 Soviet-aided projects — broke ground at Wulongmiao in November 1952 and began generating power in April 1954 with two 12,000-kW units; He Long attended the ribbon-cutting. The Zhongliangshan Coal Mine broke ground in 1955 and started mining in 1959, and in 1953 the Chongqing Meat Combined Processing Plant and the Chongqing Changjiang Machine Tool Works were successively prepared. During Third Front construction, the Southwest Aluminum Processing Plant (Plant No. 112) was sited at Xipeng and, following the "mountains, dispersal, caves" principle, was divided into four zones — rolling, extrusion and die pressing, electromechanical repair, and warehousing — spaced 2–3 km apart, completed and put into production successively after 1965. Together with backbone enterprises such as Tiema and the Chongqing Automobile Manufacturing Plant, it laid the foundation of the "century-old capital of industrial endeavor".

PART 02

Current Industrial Development

In 2024, Jiulongpo District's GDP reached 206.035 billion yuan, up 6.0%; industrial value added was 43.935 billion yuan, up 3.8%; above-scale industrial value added grew 4.6%; and there were 498 above-scale industrial enterprises at year-end. Performance varied sharply by sector: electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing grew 81.8%, automobile manufacturing grew 15.0%, nonferrous metal smelting and processing was flat year on year, computer, communications and other electronic equipment manufacturing fell 2.9%, and motorcycle manufacturing fell 11.3%. Output of major products: automobiles 65,500 units; motorcycles 728,900 units (up 7.0%); aluminum products 1.1164 million tons (up 48.9%); room air conditioners 5.1204 million units. Industrial investment grew 7.1% and industrial technical-upgrade investment grew 170.5%. The district has 32 major industrial categories and 519 above-scale industrial enterprises, and has built a "248X" modern manufacturing cluster system led by advanced materials and intelligent connected NEVs, with strengths in high-end equipment manufacturing, hydrogen energy, high-end motorcycles and software/information services, while developing the Chongqing Hub Port Industrial Park Jiulong New Town around the goals of "100-billion investment, 100-billion industry, 100-billion market". Spatially, the Xipeng park hosts aluminum and light alloys, the Jiulong park hosts automobiles, motorcycles and equipment, and former industrial land around Yangjiaping–Huangjueping has been converted to commercial and cultural-creative uses.

Industrial Robot & Automation Applications

Jiulongpo has not published its industrial robot stock, annual new installations or robot density; all three figures are to be verified. Its automation level can be seen from municipal recognition lists and national-level pilots. In 2024, eight projects in the district were recognized: Chongqing Tiema Industrial Group's integrated smart factory for high-end special equipment development and Chongqing Zhenbao Technology's smart factory for semiconductor equipment core components were selected as municipal-level smart factories, while Qingling Motors' frame welding digital workshop, Chongqing Kanghui Machinery's engine component digital workshop, Southwest Aluminum's electromechanical melting-and-casting tooling digital workshop, Chalco Southwest Aluminum Plate & Strip's aluminum plate and strip digital workshop, Dongpeng Vitamin's functional beverage digital workshop, and Chongjiao Recycled Resources' green building materials digital workshop were selected as municipal-level digital workshops. The "Mine Drilling Equipment Robot-Collaborative Smart Factory" of the China Coal Technology & Engineering Group Chongqing Research Institute was selected among the first national batch of excellence-level smart factories, and the district also has two national-level smart manufacturing demonstration factories and three national-level outstanding smart manufacturing scenarios. As of 2024, the district had implemented more than 300 smart upgrading projects and cultivated 44 digital workshops at municipal level or above. Southwest Aluminum, Gree Chongqing, Loncin and Qingling are national-level green factories. Equipment in the district is dominated by six-axis welding and handling robots, heavy-load AGVs, and machine vision and inline inspection.
