Yuzhong is Chongqing's mother city, where modern industry concentrated along the riverside strip of Hualongqiao and Lianglukou. Wartime inland relocation was the starting point: in 1943, the overseas-Chinese-invested Chongqing Zhongnan Rubber General Works was completed at Hualongqiao; during the war it remade more than 40,000 tires and hundreds of thousands of pairs of soldiers' rubber shoes, and it was southwest China's largest rubber hose and belt manufacturer. The Central Printing Plant on Eling Main Street (later Chongqing Printing Plant No. 2) specialized in printing Republican-era banknotes and securities; after the war it switched to civilian products covering tobacco and liquor, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and food packaging, and was called the "king of the southwest" printing industry by peers. During Third Front construction, more than 100,000 workers moved in with their enterprises. By the 1970s and 1980s, the Hualongqiao belt had clustered more than 200 enterprises — micro-motor, electrical, Chaoyang, special motor, casting machinery and valve plants among them — employing nearly 50,000 people with gross industrial output value in the hundreds of millions of yuan, the most important industrial zone within the mother city. The turning point came in the late 1990s: in SOE reform, large numbers of enterprises closed or went bankrupt and Hualongqiao became known as the "street of laid-off workers"; large-scale demolition began in 2004 and overall redevelopment in 2005, with the Chongqing Tiandi business district built on the former site. Chongqing Printing Plant No. 2 relocated in 2012 and was converted into the No. 2 Factory Cultural and Creative Park in 2017; the No. 2 Factory Memory Museum completed its registration filing in 2025.

With manufacturing relocated out, Yuzhong has entered the stage where "the secondary sector's share is in single digits." In 2024, district GDP reached 169.15 billion yuan, up 5.5%: secondary industry value added was 10.62 billion yuan, down 1.9%; tertiary industry value added 158.53 billion yuan, up 6.0%; the secondary-tertiary structure was 6.2:93.8. GDP per square kilometer reached 7.28 billion yuan and per capita GDP 294,000 yuan — both first in the city. Industry's contribution to the economy has shifted mainly to R&D and design, software, and headquarters settlement: during the year the "4311" modern industrial system was built, with modern finance value added at 29.06 billion yuan (17.2% of GDP), professional services 15.13 billion yuan (8.9%), sci-tech innovation services 16.64 billion yuan (9.8%), and modern logistics 15.35 billion yuan (9.1%). In 2024 the district successfully hosted the 4th China Industrial Software Conference; it attracted or cultivated more than 600 software and information services enterprises and over 2,800 mid-to-high-end professionals; software business revenue topped 40 billion yuan, 11.6% of the citywide total; above-scale enterprises in the Chongqing Digital Economy Industrial Park generated revenue above 35 billion yuan. More than 150 above-scale enterprises were added during the year; fixed asset investment grew 5.4% — first among the central urban districts — and infrastructure investment grew 20.8%. There is virtually no incremental industrial land; new output value comes mainly from R&D and software businesses housed in office buildings.

Yuzhong's statistical communiqué does not separately list industrial robot installed base, annual new installations or robot density; all three figures are to be verified. The district has almost no whole-vehicle, parts or materials production lines left; actual installations of six-axis robots, SCARA units, AGVs and similar equipment occur mainly at production bases in other districts run by Yuzhong-headquartered enterprises. Verifiable robot activity within the district concentrates on two levels. First, R&D and system integration: anchored by the Chongqing Software Industry Park and the Chongqing Industrial Design Headquarters Base, more than 4,400 software and information services enterprises and over 10,000 mid-to-high-end professionals have clustered; the 4th China Industrial Software Conference was held in the district in 2024; industrial software, machine vision algorithms and production line simulation are the main forms of local technology supply. Second, service-sector scenarios: commercial service robots for delivery, guidance and cleaning have been deployed in the Jiefangbei–Chaotianmen business circle, in office buildings and in medical institutions, though there are no public statistics on unit counts (to be verified). For manufacturers setting up headquarters in Yuzhong, the district can mostly offer solution design, software and O&M services; hardware retrofits must be implemented at factories in other districts.
