Wulong sits in the canyon belt where the Wuling and Dalou mountains meet. Its mid-20th-century industries were mining, smelting, electric power, and machinery manufacturing, plus building materials, papermaking, and textiles. The most famous was the shipyard of the Wulong Shipping Company, which could build and repair wooden boats above 40 tons and wooden motor vessels; by the end of 1985 it had built 100 motor vessels of various types with nearly 5,000 tons of deadweight. During the Third Front construction period, several plants under the Sixth Ministry of Machine Building Industry and the Fuling Prefecture ramie textile mill relocated inland to Wulong; their products once sold as far as the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions, while locally the Wulong Cement Plant and the Wulong Phosphate Fertilizer Plant were cultivated. Countywide gross industrial output was 11.88 million yuan at the end of 1976. After reform and opening up, a structure formed with the electric power and fuel industries as the base and chemicals, textiles, papermaking, and building materials processing as the mainstay; industrial enterprises at one point numbered nearly 100, and by 2010 above-scale gross output had reached 2.679 billion yuan with cement output of 1.017 million tons. After Furong Cave was developed in the 1990s, tourism rose and heavily polluting, energy-intensive, low-capacity industry withdrew step by step, sending industry into a period of decline. In 2003 the municipal government approved the establishment of the Wulong Industrial Park (a municipal-level specialty industrial park and a key citywide recipient base for the phased transfer of processing trade), which gradually formed "one park, four groups." Wulong later settled on an "eco-industry" path and once turned down a plastic-bag degradation enterprise that used calcite as feedstock and would have caused significant ecological damage.

In 2024, Wulong's GDP grew 4.1%, above-scale industrial value added grew 17.1%, above-scale gross industrial output reached 6.95 billion yuan, up 13.8%, and industrial investment totaled 2.18 billion yuan, up 8.1%, with technical retrofit investment up 82.7%. Above-scale industrial revenue grew 15.3% and total profits reached 1.003 billion yuan, up 78.0%. Structurally, the eco-industrial system is "3+1": clean energy, NEVs, green building materials, and tourism equipment and consumer goods. Clean energy output grew 14.6%, and the full shale gas industry chain grew 15%; the Yinpan pumped-storage hydropower station met the conditions to start construction. Green building materials output grew 0.5%, and a smart lightweight power equipment project broke ground. NEV and parts output grew 8.4%, and an automotive high-voltage wiring harness project was completed and put into production. Tourism equipment and consumer goods output grew 22%; Wulong was named to the municipality's first batch of "low-altitude economy pilot zones" and included in the municipal-level low-altitude equipment industry development pilot counties and districts. Electricity generation in 2024 was 4.409 billion kWh (up 21.5%). Industrial scale is on the smaller side within southeast Chongqing; primary industry value added grew 2.4% in 2024, and culture and tourism value added accounts for about 12% of GDP. Agriculture (tomatoes, goats, honeybees, and more) and tourism under the "one main, two auxiliary, multiple" approach remain the main props of the regional economy. The district government has set a target of above-scale gross industrial output exceeding 10 billion yuan by 2030.

Wulong's manufacturing base is small for southeast Chongqing, with above-scale gross output of 6.95 billion yuan; automation retrofits center on standalone equipment, and dense industrial robot application scenes have yet to form. Verifiable automated equipment includes: Shengxun's building materials line, where an intelligent automatic palletizing robot stacks bricks; Yutanghao's soy product processing with continuous processing equipment; Sutong's new-energy electric bus final assembly line; and process installations such as shale gas production and processing and alcohol-based fuel repackaging in the Pingqiao and Baima industrial parks - the latter rely on DCS/SCADA centralized control and do not involve industrial robots. In 2024, technical retrofit investment grew 82.7% and industrial investment reached 2.18 billion yuan, indicating that equipment renewal spending is accelerating, but public reports contain no cases of large-scale application of welding, handling, or assembly industrial robots. In agricultural product processing, Wulong sweet potato noodles (shaofen) and goat products have been named to the national list of famous, special, superior, and new agricultural products, 6 new food and agricultural processing enterprises were introduced, and above-scale food and agricultural product processing output growth turned from negative to positive - but processing equipment still consists mainly of standalone washing, sorting, baking, and packaging machines. To be clear: no public, authoritative data exist for Wulong District's industrial robot installed base, annual new installations, or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers); all three are to be verified. The only confirmable automation indicators at present are the growth rate of technical retrofit investment and the number of enterprises in the parks.
