Rongchang's traditional industries rest on the "Four Treasures of Rongchang." Rongchang pottery emerged in the Han dynasty and flourished in the Tang and Song; together with Yixing purple-clay pottery, Jianshui pottery of Yunnan, and Nixing pottery of Qinzhou, Guangxi, it ranks among "China's Four Famous Pottery Styles," and Anfu is one of "China's Three Pottery Capitals." The Rongchang An Pottery Factory, organized in the early 1950s, gathered local master craftsmen and employed nearly 2,000 workers at its peak; over the following three decades it produced up to 9 million pieces of pottery a year and exported more than 400,000 pieces at its height, reaching over 20 countries and regions. Ramie cloth (xiabu) weaving dates back more than a thousand years and is called a "living fossil" of Chinese textiles; it continues to this day around Panlong Town. As for folding fans, more than 200 specialized fan shops with over 2,000 workers operated in the county seat during the Guangxu reign of the Qing dynasty, producing 4 million fans a year; output was still around 2 million fans in the 1970s and 1980s. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Central Animal Husbandry Experimental Institute, the Central Serum Research Institute, and the Central Agricultural Experimental Institute settled in Rongchang, laying the foundation of its standing in animal husbandry science. During the Third Front construction period, the Yongrong Mining Bureau, Huajiang Machine Works, and Yimin Machine Works were sited along the Chengdu-Chongqing highway, becoming nodes on an industrial heritage belt. Rongchang's gross industrial output was 8.58 million yuan in 1949 and reached 74.72 billion yuan in 2018. The county was converted to a district in 2015, and Rongchang High-Tech Zone is the only national high-tech zone in China with agriculture and animal husbandry as its specialty.

In 2024, Rongchang District's GDP grew 5.8%, industrial value added grew 5.6%, above-scale industrial value added grew 6.7%, and above-scale gross industrial output grew 5.3%; industrial investment grew 41.8%, fixed-asset investment grew 10.5%, and general public budget revenue reached 4.209 billion yuan, up 29.1%. The district is building a "2335" modern manufacturing cluster system: two leading industries - intelligent connected NEV parts and intelligent manufacturing, plus food and agricultural product processing; three pillar industries - biopharmaceuticals, electronic information, and new materials and new energy; three specialty industries - ceramics, apparel, and veterinary drugs; and five "rising star" industries - life sciences, future energy, smart home, sensors and instruments, and power semiconductors. Among key products, veterinary drugs grew 77.4%, electronic components 38.4%, printed circuit boards 27.8%, stainless steel household products 22.4%, paper products 13.7%, and refined tea 9.5%; declines included valves (-39.3%), furniture (-21.5%), daily-use glassware (-16.1%), and feed (-9.8%). The district added 26 above-scale industrial enterprises during the year; the ceramics industry was selected as a municipal-level SME specialty industrial cluster; Rongchang High-Tech Zone was approved as Chongqing's demonstration park for receiving the transfer of the intelligent connected NEV parts industry; and the PCB electronics industrial park attracted 57 upstream and downstream supporting enterprises, with gross output exceeding 6 billion yuan.

Rongchang has not published its industrial robot installed base, annual new installations, or robot density; all three are to be verified. Verifiable progress lies in the number of digital workshops and the certification thresholds. In Chongqing's 2024 digital workshop certification, Rongchang had 8 projects selected: Dongju Metal's laptop housing digital workshop, Deli Glass's daily-use glassware digital workshop, Gaozhi Electronics' high-protection printed circuit board digital workshop, Shishang Gongyuan's garment production digital workshop, Bisijie Electronics' high-precision printed circuit board digital workshop, Hongyao Electronics' PCB digital workshop, Huaxing Glass's glass bottle digital workshop, and Shenjinxin Electronics' high-precision PCB digital workshop. By 2024 the district held 47 municipal-level digital workshops in total. The municipal-level threshold requires equipment CNC-ization of at least 60%, CNC-ization of key processes of at least 70%, and a data collection and upload rate of 90%; after completion, operating costs must fall by at least 15%, production efficiency rise by at least 10%, the defect rate drop by at least 10%, and energy utilization improve by at least 8%. By industrial structure, automation equipment concentrates on SMT placement and AOI inspection for PCBs, automatic stamping and welding for automobile longitudinal beams and seat side panels, glass forming and palletizing, ceramic glazing and sorting, and automatic feed batching - mainly SCARA robots, six-axis handling and palletizing robots, and machine vision. Fifty smart retrofit projects are planned for 2025.
