Fengjie lies in the heart of the Three Gorges Reservoir area, and its industry was severely damaged by the migration and reconstruction of Three Gorges communities. According to public reports in 2007, the then county Party committee secretary said that most enterprises lost competitiveness sharply after relocation and ultimately all closed or went bankrupt — Fengjie's manufacturing was essentially "wiped out," making it, like Yunyang, a textbook case of reservoir-area "industrial vacuum." Industrial rebuilding since has been oriented toward "eco-industry." Spatially, the layout of "one park, two clusters, one new district" was optimized, with the park's boundaries drawn over 557.5 hectares: the Caotang cluster highlights the two clusters of eyewear manufacturing and food and agricultural product processing; the Kangle cluster cultivates coal storage and transport and the upstream and downstream energy support industries for large thermal power; and the high-speed rail eco-city emerging industry zone develops the digital economy, intelligent equipment, and modern services. Meanwhile, returnee entrepreneurship parks and micro-enterprise clusters were built in 10 townships including Anping, Xinglong, and Tuxiang. The eyewear industry started in 2015 with the formal introduction of the first eyewear enterprise; by 2024 the Caotang cluster had newly attracted 51 enterprises and 19 new move-ins, with a cumulative 67 eyewear enterprises in production, and had created the Chongqing Eyewear Industry Demonstration Base and a Chongqing SME feature industrial cluster. In energy, drawing on the hydropower of the Wujiang and Daxi rivers plus wind and solar resources, a northeast-Chongqing clean energy base was built; in 2024 new energy capacity added 290,000 kW to reach a cumulative 1.083 million kW, and the county applied to become a national rural energy revolution pilot county.

In 2024, Fengjie's GDP was 41.15 billion yuan, up 6.6% — fifth-fastest in the municipality and third in northeast Chongqing — with a three-sector structure of 18:25.6:56.4. Industrial value added grew 5.6% and accounted for 17.7% of GDP; gross output of above-scale industrial enterprises grew 6.9%. Within that, eyewear manufacturing output grew 26.8% and accounted for 9.1% of above-scale industry; food and agricultural product processing grew 17.1% for 12.6%; environmental building materials fell 10.0% for 10.5%; and the energy industry grew 6.3% for 63.2%. Above-scale industrial enterprise profits grew 6.8%. Major product volumes: 330 million pairs of finished spectacles (up 17.1%), 219,000 tons of cement (up 8.2%), 390,000 cubic meters of commercial concrete (down 19.3%), and 7.39 billion kWh of electricity (up 9.1%). On platforms, the eco-industrial park added 23 newly operating enterprises in 2024, bringing the total to 115, and achieved 7.06 billion yuan of output (up 10.7%); 849,000 square meters of standard factory buildings have been completed and put into use. At the industry level, eyewear output reached 3.02 billion yuan (up 29.6%), food and agricultural product processing 980 million yuan (up 22.8%), clean energy 3.46 billion yuan (up 10.9%), and materials 2.99 billion yuan. In agriculture, navel oranges cover 383,000 mu with annual output of 507,000 tons.

Fengjie's most recognizable automation scenario is contact lens and optical lens manufacturing. Chongqing Aishangmei Eyewear built China's first digital fully automatic production line for contact lenses, covering the whole process — raw material proportioning, mold pressing, hydration, sterilization, and packaging — inside a Class 10,000 cleanroom. A line "cockpit" screen displays in real time the running status and alarms of equipment including liquid injection machines, mold-closing ovens, color-fixing ovens, six-axis robots, color printers, lens pick-off machines, pick-off conveyors, and base mold dispensers, with digital twin technology monitoring the entire process precisely; every lens is traceable end to end, and daily output is 100,000 lenses. Chongqing Wanda Eyewear operates more than 100 automated machines in its workshop, where resin stock is heated, melted, cut, ground, and polished before coming off the line; Musheke Optics has 3 modern production lines for acetate, metal, and titanium frames, with CNC equipment machining frames to within millimeter-level tolerance, and was named a municipal-level industrial design center in April 2026. Across the county, 32 eyewear enterprises now routinely use automated production lines and digital management systems; the CNC-ization rate of key processes and the penetration of digital tools have risen sharply. Cumulatively, the county has cultivated 6 national high-tech enterprises and 31 technology-based SMEs in eyewear manufacturing and holds 146 eyewear industry patents. There is no public authoritative tally of Fengjie's industrial robot stock, annual new installations, or robot density (units per 10,000 industrial workers); all three are to be verified.
